Default New Member with Jaguar problems '00 V6

Hi everyone. I am happy to join this Jaguar community. I signed up because I have some Jaguar problems. My mom currently owns a 2000 S-type V6 with 86000 miles and that car is a headache but its her love and joy. She loves her car more than she loves me, how sad.....I have read some of the post and they have helped me a lot but now I have a bigger problem and I wanted to ask if the amazing Jaguar owners and experts could help me.

First, the car had a 5-10 second and I would have to put it in 2nd gear for it to kick in, it would get stuck on reverse when we were on a hill and while my mom was driving it was slowing down like it was losing power or it wasn't in gear. I read a post to change the shifter and I did. I also changed the fuel filter, oil filter, new oil, air filter, and a fuel injector cleaner. After I did all that the car ran like a beast. I drove it around and everything went fine. the delay was quicker and I didn't need to put it on 2nd gear, it would get stuck in reverse. It felt like the problems went away. so the next day I decided to take it back to my mom since it was ready. 80 miles non stop and it was running like a champ. I wanted to keep the car myself. But as soon as I got off the freeway and made a stop at the stop light the car went out and turned off. I was pissed. I would turn on the car and put it in drive or the other gears and it would shut off. I turned it back on and put it in reverse and it worked and I had to back up to a safe spot before I hit a car. I towed the car to AAMco and they charged 700 hundred just to take the transmission out to check it out and guy with transmission knowledge offered help and charged 1500 to rebuild it. I wanted to ask for advice from the community and see if you could help me out. Did I do something wrong? I made sure everything was connected right nothing loose. Would the transmission fluid be bad or low. Sorry for making my introduction long but my mom really loves this car and I'm trying my best for her to keep it.

I'm sorry I can't help because I'm a Newbie, too. I have a 2000 Jaguar S-Type V8, and I know from the CarFax that the trans was replaced at 37k miles, if that helps. I hope you get some answers. The people here have been very kind and helpful to me.

Makes me feel a bit better. I've done a whole lot of research on the problem and I guess the transmission on a 2000 is a pain in the ... I guess I'll have to keep looking for advice or tips and hopefully someone could help me. Thank you thought.

Seriously, though- if you dig around this specific forum, you will most likely find an old post detailing every step of what you're trying to do.
These guys saved me from losing my engine.

I'm certain your Mum appreciates all your efforts thus far! Given the situation you've described, does the car have any codes or is the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) on? If the MIL is illuminated, please pull the codes and post them so a diagnosis can be made.

The MIL is not on when I start it up but when I put it on drive and it shut off then the light shows up. As far as codes, I don't have the codes. I'm trying to find a way to get the codes from Autozone or O'reilys but since the car won't move I can't get the codes. I have no idea in how to get the codes I would drive it in reverse but I don't think I want a ticket.

I recently bought this:

Amazon.com: ElmScan 5 Compact USB OBD-II Scan Tool & OBDWiz Engine Diagnostic Software (423001): Automotive

It's cheap, but it does the job. You can pull the codes with that. Should help you from running in reverse to the auto store...haha

+1 with salmanezkhanz on purchasing an OBD-II scan tool.

I'm sure the CHP and or the Stockton PD would not take lightly you're driving in reverse down the road!

You can always "rent" a scanner from Auto Zone and the like, bring it home then take it back and get your full depsit back.

This reads like another thread I just answered - sounds like it could be an air leak, probably one of the usual hoses.

I just found out the in the state of California and Nevada,Autozone can't test nor rent the scanner. But I used a actron auto scanner and no codes showed up. What I did notice was that when I accelerated the car in park and neutral the car felt weird like it didnt have enough power. Slow hitting higher rpms. Could the change of gas cause this too? It went from plus to premium added with a fuel injector.

That sounds like the rev limiter (done by software).

Do you guys think it could also be the EGR valve?

No offense, but if you would have ordered a $20.00~$30.00 scanner from Amazon or Ebay you would have the codes already since the states listed don't rent them (?).

Anyways take this as valuable advise, order a scanner before you throw BIG $$$$ at chasing (what if) parts!

+1 on recommendation by joycesjag. With the codes, you can post them and get closer to fixing the real issues with the vehicle. Guessing can and will become extremely expensive!

I received the scanner today and I did not get codes. So the only thing to do for now is check for a vacuum leak and clean the EGR Valve. By the way, I checked the little elbow thats between the intake, a forum mentioned to check for a leak and as I checked the elbow looked good. No cracks or openings but should I still replace it?

I would if you still have the intake off, they are prone to crack underneath where you can't see. I would also replace the lower intake and upper intake gaskets. FelPro makes good cheap aftermarkets.

If the scanner can read fuel trims, see what they are at idle and 2500rpm. They'll show whether you've an air leak.
