Default New to the S-Type (Please Help)

I recently purchased a 2005 4.2 S-Type. 110k Miles

I bought this as a project for $1500.

Here are a list of the issues:

1. The transmission seems to be out. You have to take off slow or the engine will rev high. It seems to run great after 40mph. Transmission Fault reads on the dash. I will be having the tranny scanned tomorrow. Does this sound like a bad converter or stopped up filter?

2. It needs a new hood- Where is the best place to get a cheap hood? What year of all the s type's will fit my 2005. Is a 2004 a possible fit? They all seem to look the same. I have read that the 2005 is made of aluminum.

3. The sunroof is stuck in the up position, but I can hear the motor move back and fourth when pressing the button. Is this a common problem? How should I go about fixing?

4. I had a scan done a O'Reilly's
Codes
p0174-Definition-System Too Lean Bank 2
p0300-Definition-Random/multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
p0301-Definition-Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
p0303-Definition-Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
p0305-Definition-Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
p1316- No Code Definition Available

*O'Reilly's said it could need new spark plugs, so I bought some BOSCH Iridium Plugs. Are these good plugs for this car? I haven't installed these yet.

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Please do a simple intro in the "New members area, intro is a must" when you get a moment.

Item #1, at the distance travelled, sounds like a simple transmission service with new filter/fluid MAY sort it. The ZF trans is tough, but luvs clean fluid from time to time.

The others I will leave for those with more S knowledge than me.

I'd leave in the current plugs for now as you risk fitting unsuitable ones and you absolutely don't want to add problems. OE are NGK IFR5N10

Misfires are usually air leaks and/or bad coils. (Can be but usually aren't caused by other items.)

Coils go bad due to being baked and/or water/oil in the plug wells - take a look

You can guess and swap parts which works but can be slow and costly or hope that OBD live data will steer you. Simple tool like elm327 will do. Fuel trims, hot engine, parked, at idle & about 2500rpm will at least check for air leaks though with 1,3,5 cyl faults you're looking at something about the bank they share.

Plan to grab JTIS, free download.

Keep in mind always that an unhappy engine tends to upset the trans which may or not be OK.

I will check the coils.
Sorry, I am new to the jag. How do you check for air leaks and is there a common place where they take place?

Get some starter fluid and start by spraying around all vacuum lines with the engine running. Short sprays directed at particular spots. If there is a leak the engine will race when the fluid gets into the cylinder.

This is an old trick that is really easy plus there is no clean up since the fluid evaporates leaving little or not residue.

Doing this will be good because it will cause you to closely inspect the engine allowing you to familiarize yourself with placement of components while not, really, taking anything apart. You will also listen to the engine and become familiar with its song. That will, obviously, pay dividends later on should the engine's "tune" change.

But that can miss them and anyway the thing to do is read the OBD data to find out if there actually are any leaks. If there aren't then no amount of spraying will help. And if there is a leak you know to keep hunting if a bit of spraying hasn't revealed it.

Good point, the spray trick is just a good one to have in your back pocket for those times when you do need to search for a leak.

Sorry I have been gone. I had some legal problems with the title. I just got everything straightened out. Can someone send me the link to the elm327 tool. I googled it and could only find one that operated with wifi. Fill me in on the elm327 please.

Thanks, Kelby

Default Battery health

You also want to ensure you have a healthy battery in your car...one that is fully charged. Otherwise, it might trigger false-positive codes. Follow the link in my signature for info on battery chargers. These cars have sophisticated electronics and a healthy battery is absolutely essential when diagnosing trouble codes.

re: Elm327 Code Reader - lots of these available on eBay. You'll have to do some research on which is suitable for your needs. They come in WiFi and Bluetooth varieties; use WiFi if you have an iPhone as the Bluetooth type doesn't work on iPhone.

There are other code readers you can purchase instead, but the Elm327 is inexpensive and convenient.

Do these read more than the O'reilly's scanners? Here is a link of a scanner I found online:
Mini ELM327 Vgate OBDII OBD2 Diagnosis Coche Multimarca V1 5 Cable USB Scaner | eBay

Does this tool seem compatible with my 2005 S-type?

The problem with the sunroof might be the plastic parts in the runners breaking. If this is the case the link below has a parts repair option in post 7 tbird6 and post 9 Abonano.
