Would stongly encourage people who need an all seaon tire to consider the Michelin Pilot A/S Plus. It's considered an ultra high performance all season tire (Z-rated). Recently put a set on my 04 XJ8 and they are absolutely amazing. Quick direct turn-in and they stick like glue. Look great also. Ride is as good as the useless Michelin XMX's I replaced. My local Jag mechanic (Motorcars Incorporated, Plainville CT.) matched the Tirerack price. Couldn't be happier. $900 out the door (mounted, balanced, taxes) for 235/50-18's.

Way too costly for me. Has Michelin finally begun offering a treadwear warranty on the Pilots? Their stubborn refusal to do so has kept me from buying Michelin tires for any of our vehicles for more than 15 years now. Michelin consistently overprices their tires by a longshot, and without a decent treadwear warranty I simply won't buy them....

Default Rotate Tires

Yes you can rotate tires if you have a crappy 3.0
For those of us who are smart enough to stay away from the 3.0 and the 4.0 .................You can "Not" rotate on a Type R!

Welcome to the forum.

There are some places that you can rotate, even with an R.

After all this talk about tyres, can anyone tell me the best MAKE of available tyre giving the softest ride? Is it Avon?

Leedsman, I'm not sure about Avon as I don't think they are sold stateside. I've had good luck with Pirellis and Michelins on my previous XJs though. One of the vendors here is Tire Rack which allows prospective customers to search for tires based on a number of criteria. Not sure what you have available in the UK though.

Newbie.... Careful there buddy... One of us stupid enough to buy a 3.0 may have the knowledge to bail your pompus butt out some day.....

Now where did that smiley go that was flippin' the bird......

Well I guess I have to explain my anger....My wife wanted a jaguar type S back in 2003(3.0) and I leased one for her....that was a mistake. Problem after problem, now my buddy got a (4.0) not as many problems and it was auctally a decent car. Now the Type R is a whole different beast, the reason I hate hate hate 3.0's is because I had a terrible experience with them. My brothers father in law also has a 3.0 that he purchased new, and couldn't even give it away. I waited for a long time to buy a Type R, and am I sooo glad I finally got one!

Sorry if I sounded like an ***, and I am sure I prob will need one of you 3.0 owers to bail me out one day.

Hmmm... Funny thing is there really isn't that much difference between the Base and the R that would influence reliability... Some of the common issues plague all of them... They run the same trans and such.. To be honest, the 3.0 is a real solid motor.. No, it isn't "slam you into the seat" powerful, but it's not bad either.. So, hate to tell you, but if you feel the S type 3.0, post 03 update, is a "crappy" car you are in for a major disappointment with your R as well... Soooo Sorry....

I just Put Tires on my 01 S type and i went with the federal ss595 size 245/50/16's and wow what a suprise i looked at tons of other tires and even put a set of potenza's on and after a month i found them to be awful the ss595's have made my car handle better corner harder and stop shorter .. and the price was well under most of the other tires i looked at if you want a great tire and a great price take a look you will be suprised .. good luck let us know what you end up with and how they work out for you

The OEM tire on the 05 is a Continental ContiPro Contact in a size of 245-40x18. These tires have lasted 73,000 miles (60,000 tread life rated).

However, I've found a newer Continental tire called the Extreme Contact DWS. It's an all weather tire and the tests run by Tirerack rate it the best of about 5 comparable tires including Pirelli, Michellin, Firestone and one other plus this one. It's only rated for 50,000 miles but the treadlife is rated at 500 instead of 400.

It's also less expensive ... $155 each vs $181 for the OEM tire.

Be aware that there are many complaints on a number of different forums about the Continental DWS sidewalls being too soft to support vehicles that weigh in at 4,000 pounds like our S-Types do. The tires seem to wallow in the corners and some have become damaged beyond repair. I researched this tire back in the winter and ruled it out due to the soft sidewall reports. Owners with lighter vehicles seem to like it very much, but those with heavier vehicles complain rather frequently. Do your research before you decide....

Meh, take forum reviews with a grain of salt. The set of Generals I got were rated #2 by users on tire rack (they still are, BTW). While they do perform very good and are wearing well, I'm not happy with the noise they are generating as they wear. It is very similar to my experience with Korean tires. I even checked where the size I bought were made and it was in Germany! But, then again the only tires I was ever happy with were a set of Kelly's I had back in the 90's. So, I'll probably never find a set that I truly endorse.

Could it be that the reviews you were reading were for the Extreme Contact DW as opposed to the DWS? I read a review today on just this sort of thing. The reviewer had confused the two tires.

Nope. I read them carefully, and they were concerning the DWS. My research on this tire was done last winter, the January/February timeframe. If you're interested in this tire, you should do your own research and see if things have improved (or declined). I also spoke at length with a trusted manager of one of our local Discount Tire stores. He confirmed that the DWS sidewalls are quite flexible and don't hold up as well on heavier vehicles. He agrees with me that at the price point I'm considering, the Dunlops would be his first choice. Again, this was back in the wintertime. Fresh research may be called for here. Our S-Type doesn't need new tires quite yet, but probably will by early 2011 if these cheap Hankooks continue their current wear pattern. So I'll revisit all of this information, probably during the holidays....
