no reverse

no reverse
We recently lost the ability to reverse in our 2002 Jaguar S-Type. The gear selector is very hard to shift and the drive gear exists somewhere between the N and D.
We took it to our regular garage and they said that both the selector cable and the transmission needed to be replaced. The cable was doable, but the mechanic bill for the transmission was way out there.
First, the mechanic said he removed the shifter from the equation and still had no reverse. Could he be wrong? My hope is to get the shifter cable replace to stop the slipping and hard to find gears, and if necessary, have the transmission rebuilt rather than replaced. If anybody has any insight, it would be very welcome.
And if anybody is in the Chattanooga area, another transmission mechanic named Jason Randall quoted me about half the price to rebuild. If that name rings a bell to anybody, let me know.

I recall reading a few different problems with your MY transmission. I believe this link could be the culprit here: Metal Shifter Cam
I would call Ken tomorrow explain whats going on and ask him about the above part. Ken is a very knowledable guy! I know quite a few members have dealt with him including myself and have nothing but high reguards for him.

Although it's possible the trans is bad it's also rather unlikely. It's much more likely that you're suffering from taking the car to someone who doesn't know enough to come to the right conclusions.
If you use Search you can read other posts about this issue, where the fix was not to replace the trans.
