Default Odd A/C behavior.

So out driving My STR today and the A/C quits. Vents and fan working, just warm outside air coming from them. A few minutes later compressor restarts and car is cooling off. Didn't do it again, but just wondering if this is something anyone else has had happen?
Also note it was over 90 today, so needed that A/C!

Could be one of the evap core thermistors that thinks the evap core has frozen, or the evap core did freeze. Mine did it on very humid days, turned out it was a bit low on gas freezing the core. If you have a scanner that reads the climate control module, the sensor outputs are in the data stream. I use an iCarSoft i930. I should've checked the gas level first I suppose.

I know the system was serviced a couple years ago (before I bought it) but it may need a proper service again. I was figuring that it had gone into a compressor protect mode due to overpressure or possible icing being as it started a few minutes later. But just two weeks back it drove for several hours in hotter weather, too. Just a bit odd is all. Hopefully our shop will be getting a new AC machine in the near future and I can get it checked out.

Are you sure the compressor is kicking in and out?

We normally see hot air from a bad DCCV. Has yours been changed?

If you inspect the compressor check for yellow/green stains on the bottom of the compressor. They tend to leak there first. No use in fixing something that will need replacement in the future.

We are lucky because the Lincoln LS uses the same compressor so they are cheap and easy to find.

Call me Mr. Vegas, but I'm willing to bet your hard-earned money on the refrigerant being a little low. The pressure could have been hovering near the limit where the controller shuts off the compressor clutch. For reasons unknown, a slight change in pressure was just enough to trigger a shutdown.

I'd certainly suggest a refrigerant service so you know the quantity is correct before worrying about anything else.

One other thought: Were you accelerating shortly before this happened? I believe the PCM shuts off the compressor clutch above a certain throttle setting, to reduce parasitic drag and make maximum power. When this happens, it can be a minute or so before you feel the lack of cooling air, as the evaporator stays cold for a bit.
