All I can tell you is that Royal Purple is far more expensive and exclusive than Commoner Purple.

Anything at all that meets the jag spec, the main thing being 5W30 for most owners.
Most if not all (I suspect it's all) of the extra cost in a "premium" oil is their profit and advertising. If you like lining the pockets of the sellers, fine.
I wish we had a Definitive Oil thread and that anyone asking was pointed to it with a Thread Closed at that point.

Until someone takes a fair number of brand new S-Types (or at least their engines) and subjects them to scientific double-blind tests with different oils over a fair period (years) we'll never know. That isn't even possible now so the whole subject will at best be guesswork.
I still think we NEED a short thread pointing out it's not possible without such testing to second-guess Jaguar's engineers and their tests so just use anything you're happy with.
I would love to see such tests, done properly.

Based on BITOG threads, Pennzoil Ultra should do good job of cleaning engine. First couple oil changes of Pennzoil then switch to any other reputable oil of your choice would be good start to your new-to-you Jaguar. And yes, use 5W-30 as we don't know any better than this at the moment for the engine in our Jag's.

This marks the difference between the never ending 'which oil is best' and 'which octane is best' posts. It would take decades to see any difference in one oil over another vs. seeing/hearing/feeling immediate results with varying octane levels.
BITOG is great if a person has a lot of time to pick up a little knowledge, but is short of real world results of the type proposed by JagV8.
I can't tell you what brand of oil is in my cars right now as I buy whatever's on sale at the time. Pay attention to spec and viscosity, the rest is fluff.
