Default Oil Filter question

I had a friend give me an OEM Jaguar filter that was left over from his stash for a 4.2 XK8. The part number is 4H23-6714-BA. I was going to use it for my 4.0 S-Type but I haven't been able to verify that it will fit. It looks like the 4H23-6714-CA will fit and 4.0 and 4.2 filters are interchangeable if my reading is correct and the BA is just the older generation filter. I do know this filter has been sitting around for 4-5 years. Is it just an earlier generation of the current part number? Thanks.

Back in 2003 when the new 4.2 engine was introduced, nobody knew that it used a shorter filter and the parts dept always gave us the regular V8 filter for oil changes. I told them that the filter on the engine was shorter and they told me 'Well, that's all we have". A few weeks later they got a shipment of the correct filters so we used them from then on.

Long story short.... They fit and work just fine.

Short of it, both mountings and seal are the same. The 4.2L filter is a little shorter and slightly larger diameter. I try to put the correct one on, in a pinch I'll use either one to get a car on the road.

Cheers,

Jaguar parts can be hard to come by on short notice here in the middle of corn fields. We have a better supply of John Deere tractor parts...anyway the Fram oil filter PH5618 (a little longer and smaller diameter than Jaguar filter - sounds like the early Jag filter) fits my 05 S-type 4.2L, BTW, it is also a fit for the Lincoln LS 3.9L (and Lincoln also had two sizes.)

On another note, the Purloator A24866 air filter works on the 4.2L, but, just to complete the comparison, will not work in the LS 3.9L.

Okay, I'll drop the Lincoln references in the future. Its just that you S-type owners would like your car even more if you, like I, had an LS first. The S-type is that much better.
