Hey everyone my name is Jake and I live in Texas. I have two things I need some help with.
Ok first things first. It's a 2001 S-Type 4.0 V8. Roughly 52,000 original miles.
First thing is check engine light is on. Ran it and it says bank 1 O2 sensor is bad. Just wondering how hard this would be for me to change.
Second, I have a small leak from one bolt that holds valve cover on. It's on the passenger side. Shop says I can pull this one bolt and change a gasket/O-ring and not pull the whole cover. Valve cover seals were just replaced in September. Can anyone attest to this.

Reason: Included model and mileage
the o2 sensor is piece of cake to swap out . as long as the thread lets go easy . which they normally do . you can use a ring spanner or an 02 sensor tool . but try with the ring spanner first . just push the sensor plug and cable through the ring end first .
bank one is the right hand side of the car . but although you've determined its bank one you need to determine if it is upstream sensor 1 or downstream sensor 2 .
as for the leak try tightening the bolt slightly . if its tight you will need to replace the cam cover gasket . also a strait forward job . its kind of a big o-ring and four spark plus seals . and with age do deteriorate.
So I can't remove just that bolt that's leaking and replace the bolt seal? The shop that replaced the gaskets back in September timeframe recommended to try it. But it seems odd to me.

No sir. The whole cam cover needs to come off. Luckily this is the passenger side (much easier to get off than drivers side)

Hiya Jake from Texas,
Do you have the code for the fault? It should be 5 characters, starting with P, followed by 4 numbers. Some Jag codes get misinterpreted by code readers and give you the wrong description. It's always best to start with the code, not the description.
If it is an O2 sensor, they are easy enough to change. Just like a spark plug. The only hitch, as previously mentioned, is that sometimes the threads seize up, but you can usually work them loose.
Go with a name brand O2 sensor that has the proper connector. Stay away from 'universal-fit' models that require splicing the wires.
The check engine light is on steady, right? If so, that's telling you there's a fault that will need attention soon. No need to panic. But if the light is flashing, that means the catalytic converter may be overheating and you should stop as quickly as possible to prevent expensive damage.

there is some good advice above ^
the rubber seal on the bolt is really a cushion to protect the plastic cam cover from the steel bolt . and adds to spreading the weight of the bolt across the cover . the gasket/seal should seal inwards of the bolt hole .
hopefully not. but its possible it may have a cracked rocker cover .
I have not pulled the valve cover on a 4.0 SType but my guess it is the same as the XK8 4.0 so this link is for gasket change on my XK8. I hope it helps!
I change both the XK8 & SType but the ones on the SType 3.0 2 were frozen in place and had to use a air hammer to get it out. The xk8 4.0 were just a little difficult to get to but not frozen in place. But I still classify them as a PITA to deal with.
It also worth downloading this

NO. The cam cover bolts fit in a certain way and the gasket fits just under the bolt frame. The reason the gasket is leaking is sitting and drying out or a crap installation. It is a rubber gasket. There are instructions to get the damn cover off here on the forum. I just did it and it is a small bear on the passenger side and a monster bear on the driver side. When you order a gasket kit, be sure to order a throttle body gasket. You have to take that off too. Attention to detail is essential or you will continue to have leaks. Mine are GONE.

Funny thing is they were both just replaced in September!
