Oil, Temp Gauge. DSC light
Hello, I just purchased a 2002 S-Type 4.0 w/ 55k miles
I am have a few questions about it and I figured if anyone could help me I would find them on this forum. First off what is the best oil to use? Next inquiry, when I first start my car after non-usage the temp meter will go to high then cool off immediately with no effect on the way the car drives, does anyone know what may cause this or how to fix it. Lastly the DSC light is on, on my dash. Is that a major ordeal? I would appreciate any help. Thanks for your time

Hi and welcome! Type of oil...what does your owners manual say to use? that's what i would use, or if you have a preference of a particular oil brand, use it as long as it's 5W30.
As for your DSC light, you need to pull the code and see what's up. Could be as something simple as a wheel sensor. And for your temp meter pegging then returning to normal, i think that's what it's supposed to do. It's normal.

If you are good with cars, you need to diagnose the temp gauge problem! If you aren't comfortable, take it to a shop! My 4.0 had the exact same problem. I figured it was a bad ground or something in the gauge. One day it went to hot and didn't go back down. It may be the water pump because the factory used a WP with a plastic impeller and they tend to breakand untill it gets hot and expands, it doesn't create any suction.
Also, I've had a problem with the factory thermostats. Apparently the medium they used inside the bore does not melt at the correct temp. and it will require a high temperature and then all of a sudden open.
You need to baby the 4.0's, they are very fragile. Mine blew at 65,000 miles and a friend of mine had one that lasted a whopping 75,000 miles! Mind you, we both maintain and serviced our cars regularly. I would also recommend you find out whether or not the engine had it's timing chains and guides replaced. If not, you will want to change them to the much stronger aftermarket metal ones as this ends the life of a lot of 4.0L engines!
