Default 'oo S-Type Drivers Door Electric Window Regulator

My drivers door window went down yesterday got half way up then stopped, I took it to a local garage (the neatest dealer is about thirty miles away) and asked what they thought, they said it was the window regulator and went into the office and came back with and estimate of $800 installed.
When I questioned the price he said the part was $640 plus $160 labor, I called the dealer and they quoted $262 parts and $240 labor, still a bit steep I thought but alot better than $800.

I think the local garage had $$$$ signs ringing in his eyes when he saw me pull in.

greed. We have set prices for most jobs. In the long run, cheaper going to dealer in a lot of cases.

I'll disagree with you there. There are independent shops that give really crappy service and there are dealers that do the same. It would be very nice if the world fit in a "one size fits all" blanket so we could say don't go here or there. The truth is, you need to find out who you are dealing with. Our local dealers (all 3 are owned by the same company) run a price matrix for parts so that the cheapest you can buy something over the counter is list price + 20%. Some prices are double list price. Keeps me in business. But I'm not dumb enough to throw this over all dealers. Some are really good people.

I can give you plenty of examples of people that will never go back to the dealer and others that will never go to independents. Hell, we've seen on this forum plenty of people that will never buy one of those "piece of junk" Jaguars again. Most of us don't agree with them, but they are out there.

Just to update, with some help from Jag_Genius sourcing the part I did the repair myself, the dealerships and the local garage all qouted a two hour labor charge for installing the new regulator, the regulator arrived today and I went straight to work, I had the door card off old one out,new one in and door card back on and job done in 45 minutes, I couldn't believe how easy it was.
I saved myself $240 labor (2 hours @ $120 per hour) plus about $160 saving on the part.

Many thanks Jag_Genius for you help, much appreciated

First, let me say thanks to many posts on replacing Jaguar window regulators. I have a 2000 S-Type. My driver side window did the same thing. A shop estimate was $435.00. I replaced it for $32.00. That's right! I got a brand new regulator on Ebay for that price! It took me about 45 minutes from to finish. Here's what made the job easy. First, I read several forum posts (one had photos on how to remove the panel). Next, I watched videos on youtube. Last, I went to the local pull-a-part and studied a regulator already off a door. Only used a 10mm socket and screwdriver. I'm not a mechanic, Just someone who loves his Jag and can't afford repairs. Happy to explain how easy it was to fix.

Very brave of you indeed to resurrect a thread that is nine years old!

So happy you love the brand and glad the posts helped you repair your window regulator.

Remember on the early 2000-2002 S types you can use the Lincoln LS regulator and they are everywhere. Very easy to change.
