Over haul a 2000 S-type 4.0
So, my husband purchsed my car as a gift for 10 grand in 2006. since then i have replace parts of the a/c, a new transmission a whole host of stuff, basically random stuff and it seems every visit to repair something cost 1300.00.
I love the car, the body and interior are imaculate and we just put new tires on it.. Right now the A/C needs to be replaced. I need to put the wiper pump in (have a new one) it needs 2 power window motors and an upper radiator hose (that i have duct taped....LOL). I am sure something else will happen.
Is it worth it to take to a shop and have the whole car overhauled - motor electrical or just let it go. I would love to keep it forever. My husband says dump it, he doesn't want me to dump any more money into it. I really don't want a car payment and it won't be on a Jag (my dream car)....would love opinions. or know if anyone else has done this.

Hi, I own the 2000 s-type 3.0 L executive and I love it to.
I just replace the lower balljoints and I have to replace the window motors on the rightside butt I do it myself so the costs stay one a normal level. I don't now how handy your husband is but when you do it yourself the costs wil not so high.
grtz Mat
p.s. I would never dump a Jag.

I have to disagree.
You are haemorraghing money on this car, that to be really honest is not worth spending money on, as it is worth very little, and all the repairs you do to it do not add to the value one little bit. It is not a classic car and will likely never be, so I would sell it and try to get a later year Jaguar S-type. The cars after 2003/4 are far better cars as Jaguar put a lot of effort into them to improve various aspects.
If you can afford for a shop to carry out an overhaul, you can afford a better Jaguar, really !

Where are you located?
My wife decided to hit a wall with my Stype in the tunnel last Friday, so I might have some spare parts for you as the car is total loss.
Both front doors are not opening any more, windshield broken etc. wife is doing about Ok, Tuesday I will have a quick look at the car before it ies for scrap.

Sorry to hear about your wifes unfortunate mishap but I'm glad she's ok! If you have a black front ashtray and a fuel cap door, I'd be interested. Exterior color isn't important on the fuel door because all I need is the small black plastic latch piece that keeps the door latched.
Good luck on the recovery to your wife

Hope your wife is doing OK after her inderscretion with the wall. I dont want to sound like a mercenary, but I would be interestd in some interiour parts if we have matching interior colour. My is a S-type 2000 4l, interior trim is SDZ / BR. Im looking for the door bezel inserts (4) which is the plastic cover's that sits behind the door handle.
Drop me a line if we have a match.

Iain

I already said goodbye to the car last Tuesday so I can't retrieve any parts anymore. Didn't recover anything except the leaper on the bonnet.
The car's body was twisted so much that could only close the doors with force. windshield was broken, glove box doesn't close anymore but surprisingly the airbags did not pop during the event.

thank you all!
so I still have the car, but purchased a Prius, which is a new story...who cares! My son has a Subaru that is out of commission, so he is using the Jag. It still needs A/C and the driver/passenger window fix. Cracking up because he is the car guru, NOW it's a car worth fixing up! Perhaps it's wearing a suit in the sweat box? We decided not to dumb the Jag. I love this car!

To me there are 3 parts to owing a car. 1. Economics. 2. Reliability. 3. Emotional attachment.
Depending on the mileage you have on the car, and assuming the timing chain tensioners have been replaced, if it is paid for, then it comes down to a trade off of increased maintenance costs over time versus it's reliability. Think of the emotional distress every time something new breaks on the car!
A good running 2000 S-type 4.0 is worth between $3K and $6K. An engine rebuild is $4K to $8K plus labor. A rebuilt trans is $2.5K plus labor. If you don't do the labor yourself, expect to pay $1K or more for any significant repair work.
You can purchase a newer model S-type with lower mileage in the $15K range.
To get your 2000S type to be as reliable as a lower mileage newer S-type, (engine rebuilt, trans rebuild, suspension bushings, shocks, coolant lines, A/C service) you need to invest at least $10K to $15K! Overall it is better to junk the 2000 and buy a newer car.
Drive the car into the ground and junk it or part it out.
On the other hand, if you are emotionally attached to the car, can work on it yourself, and it is not your primary car, then as long a it keeps running and you can pay and fix everything that breaks, then go for it! That is what the core of us on the forum are doing.
