Default Park Brake Fault...

Having followed the instructions on your other posts a still cant get my Park Break Fault to stay off. In December my Jag was put to bed for about 3 weeks while I drove around in my wifes 4x4. When I started driving it again I got the Park Break Fault alert come up. After reading your other posts I put it down to the battery maybe being a little run down so I charged it up and tried the "reset EPB" instructions. The best I can get is to clear the fault until I either release the break myself or just pull away then its back. I have had the car to my local garage who changed front and rear pads and also recharged the battery again. They were also unable to clear the fault and assured me that the breaks are working fine and assume its a diagnostic fault. They also said to track down the problem could become very costly to fix and probably unnecessary. I have just tried again with jump leads from my wifes car for the extra umphh with no joy. I can hear the EPB engage and release and feel the difference if I have my foot on the brake. The servo does sound a little creaky but nothing excessive and no different to the sound before this fault.
I welcome any thoughts from anyone.

Rob,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model are the most likely to be able to help.

The S-Type certainly seems to have more issues with the EPB than other models.

There's a big clue. Remove and lubricate it now before it seizes completely.

I don't think we know exactly what the hardware & software do to report that but failure of a battery to provide a VERY large peak current AND keep the voltage high seems to be one combination. It may be that freeing up / regreasing moving parts (including motor, caliper parts & cables) might fix it. A new battery may help but if so it's likely because it's covering up a slight problem that is liable to get worse over time.

Sadly, getting at some of the parts is rather hard. The caliper end stuff is accessible, though, so arguably is worth a go - especially if you DIY.

You have charged an old battery. How old is it?

You might need to replace it to fix your problem.

today i tried with 2 batteries coupled up with jump leads so i would have thought it had enough juice. im reluctant to get under it as i havnt got a pit and it seems to long on the front and back to make it up onto my ramps. though i wouldnt like it up there when im releasing breaks so it looks like another chat with my local garage. At least its only the fault alert atm and not sticking on like some posts ive read.

Hi,

You seem to have covered two of the main causes ie worn rear brake pads(assuming the Discs or Rotas are Okay) and that the battery is up to scratch.

From what you say the EHB motor appears to be working and holds the car well when applied. The only other item worth checking is the Handbrake Module, which is located in the boot(Trunk) area beside the fuse box. Sometimes this unit can become faulty and has to be replaced. Contributor V40TC did an excellent post on this subject a wee while ago, so if you use the search facility it may come up and be of assistance to you.
Regards,
Inver.

Good Point by InverStype.

Be sure and check for water/moisture in the spare tire well. Should be bone dry.

Ahhhhh. I did have to mop up a small amount of water around the time this problem started so presumably the electronics could have become damp. ive seen a EPB module on ebay for £29ish so will maybe give that a try. I have been unable to remove the connector to my module so will prob try again with the spare tyre out.
Many thanks for the tip.

I think there are 2 main modules kinds, one uses CAN and the other SCP, so buy the right one

Yours will be the SCP kind.
