I had a parking brake failure message come up on my display intermittently for several months where the car would not move in any gear. After turning the car off and restarting several times, the problem would mysteriously go away until a week or two later, when the message would re-appear. I did some research on the internet and found that the culprit may be a weak battery so I went to Jag to have the battery tested and sure enough, my original battery of 7 years was almost dead! A new battery and no problems since! The explanation had something to do with the low voltage being sent to the parking break motor at start up was too weak to engage the motor and once the impulse is sent, it is not resent until you start the car again. The weak battery was not sending a consistently strong impulse to the parking break motor! Test your battery first if you are experiencing the same error message. Then you can troubleshoot from there if it is not the battery.
