Good day everyone
Please help me with one question!I've opened valve cover and noticed that secondary chain tensioner is broken, and i think that exhaust camshaft moved one teeth because marks on camshafts aren't parallel and engine works like diesel! What should i do to bring it back? And where i can find crankshaft mark,or simply intall crankshaft settinig tool and rotate crankshaftt till it stops???Jaguar s-type 4.0l

Note that once the crankshaft setting tool is in place, no attempt should be made to rotate the crankshaft.

Look in the XK8/R Faq's https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ts-data-29800/
There are several threads with details. I hope it's just the tensioner and the valves are good.

Before you dump any money in this check it very carefully. As was mentioned above you need to check for bent valves and piston damage.
DO NOT START THE ENGINE ANYMORE!!!!!
If you are VERY lucky it only jumped one tooth and the impact has been minor. You need to lock the cam shafts in the properly timed position before installing the new chain and tensioners. There are two flats on the camshafts that need to be facing up. This picture shows them out of position.

There is a factory tool to hold the cams in position but several guys on the Lincoln LS board have done it without the tool. Of course several of them have also had the pleasure of going back in a second and third time to get them in the proper position. I think I would use the tool or make something I can bolt down to hold the cams.
Also read about all the different tensioners that Jaguar has used. Also I would change all the tensioners, primary, secondary and the rails. They all wear out together. You have a big job ahead of you!

Thanks guys! The compression on all cilinders is good it means all valves and pistons are in good condition? Also i've looked on flywheel and found out that there are three holes and which one of them is mark of top dead center? Also looked in JTIC and can't found the procedure, only take this and that out,but nothing about timing!

The 4.0 S-Type crank lock tool is DIFFERENT from the XJ/XK 4.0, all other tools are the same.
The crank is NOT TIMED AT TDC. It is timed at 45 degrees AFTER TDC.
The cams are then locked with the 'flats' up and parallel to the head.
Here are the 2 crank lock tools, the S-Type AJ28 is on the right.

I uploaded the Jaguar Engine Course 168 from My Student Guide.
Engine Repair Course Code 168.pdf
Here is a forum thread with pics for cylinder head and timing chain discussions.
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-1998-a-68299/
You must remove the CKPS from the Engine bell housing and install the crank lock tool to set the crank for timing the Camshafts. (DO NOT USE THE TOOL TO HOLD THE CRANK FOR DAMPER REMOVAL, YOU WILL BENT A SEGMENT AND THE TIMING DISC/TORQUE CONVERTER DRIVE PLATE WILL BE RUINED)
read read read is all I can tell you so you will be familiar with the procedures.

Thanks Bob!!
Jaguar University is very cool!!
Any chance you could post the rest of your University training?? I have never seen or heard any of this. It has a level of detail not in the JTIS or the JEPC. It even had a reference to piston oil squirters being used on the SC 4.2L engine. I have been looking for that information for another thread.

heck, yes. Rather a lot.
Er... not sure they're called that ("University") but lots of PDFs. I'm guessing I downloaded a dozen or two, on pretty diverse subjects (from EMS to satnav diagnosis), and I doubt I got everything as some subjects wouldn't have appealed.
Not sure these are proper ref #s, but maybe: EMS Book A & B, EP02, SDS008, SDS012, 684, 688, PTEC/99, TSBE/99, NP04, NP06NAS, T201/00, TINTR02, NP07, NP09, NP10
As well, there are the newer (& older LOL) Technical Guides.
Probably more, I just grabbed what I could in a mega-download but never had much interest in indexing it (too busy reading LOL).
hmm, AJ133 stuff for the 5.0 engine.
Various OBD stuff (100s of pages in total).

I've found that misterious 45 degree ATDC crankshaft slot! It's simply have different geometry that the others slots! Now camshafts on bank B are parallel but on the left side they are not it seems like it jumped one teeth on the exhaust camshaft and now it seems like i won't be able to install camshaft locking tool!
Guys how to align that unparallel exhaust camshaft to apply tool?
