You might find this diagram helpful as to what the PCM is doing to monitor and control the engine.
OnBoardDiagnostics.com - Engine Basics

There are similar diagrams in Jaguar doc on the S-Type. Essentially all modern cars need to be along those lines to meet emissions laws.

Default Project complete

The parts arrived yesterday and I hit the auto parts store for some fresh fluids and a couple of minor tool accessories like a 1/2" universal joint driver. Got started bright and early this morning. I didn't have any problems doing the job. My one "complaint", so to speak, is how tight everything is together. I'm used to my truck where I just climb up and sit on one of the fenders or the radiator area (I'm too short to reach anything at 5'2", even with a step stool) and lean over a motor that has plenty of work space. My ring size is a 5 3/4, just to give you an idea how small my fingers are, and I had a challenging time getting my fingers and tools into some areas to get the bolts off the covers. (My covers have 6 bolts on each rather than the snazzy pop off deal seen in some of the videos.) The one on the right, bottom, back was the most difficult. I finally went and bought a 9/16 box wrench (not part of my regular sets) because not even my smallest ratchet would fit in that space. I had to laugh at the fact that between two sets of wrenches, I had the sizes on either side of 9/16, but of course was missing the one size I needed. Anyway, all is fixed and a fresh scan reveals no error codes. I work from a home office and have to log some hours now, but I hope to take the car out tomorrow and see how she likes the new parts. Thanks again to all of you for your help on this project. My next one will be to remove the multi-disc player from the trunk (boot) to see if I can get the cartridge out. It doesn't play anything and won't eject, but that's another project for another day and another post. Will talk to you all soon!

A hearty congrats to you for your concerted efforts to get your car into shape. Gotta love a gal who can do her own wrenching....

Took the car out today and she is SSSSSSSSSMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHH!! !!!!!!!!
She's one happy ride right now and I am happy with myself for meeting a new challenge and learning something new. I love a sense of accomplishment!
I have to admit, when I pulled in the drive, the hubs asked how she did and I just laughed and said "She's so smooth, she could work at Hooter's!" I'm glad he can appreciate my odd sense of humor.

Probably not the S-Type ones and really you'd be far better in the right forum! Or just go on a car parts site like rockauto

It was a query about an old XJ I think. Not relevant to this thread.

I hope you are all nuts! Sane people are just so dull! Please dismiss my non sequitur comment, JagsV8. I thought maybe you had meant to post on another thread. Now we have the mystery of the missing post and who killed it lol. I'm sure it's nothing unusual though.
