Default Possible buy

I'm looking at buying a 2002 s type 4.0. The abs light e brake and dcs failure on the dash are on. Should I avoid buying it or is it an easy fix?

No-one can say based on that but be sure you'll need to change the timing chain tensioners etc.

Quite expensive if you can't DIY those.

A thorough, on hoist, inspection, preferably by a mechanic who knows that model well, is a must for any car that old. There's a lot more expensive fixes lurking under that sexy body work than just the engine. The suspension has some very expensive bits in it too, especially if buying them off Jaguar. Buying them online, from outfits like Jagbits, will reduce those costs substantially. But it can still be an expensive exercise to rebuild the suspension, especially if the power steering rack needs an overhaul, which it probably will at that age, regardless of the mileage. Speaking of which, telling us the mileage & overall condition of the car will help us determine whether it's a good buy, or a run, don't walk, as fast as you can! Also if we know where you are in this big wide World, we can determine what's a fair price for that market, as the values of these cars vary wildly across the World. Though, with any car that age, if it's lived in a very cold climate, I'd be checking it out for salt induced corrosion. So getting it on a hoist is a must, in my opinion.

I live in Washington state by the Oregon border .

The car has some cosmEtic issues. It seem to run smoothly when I test drove it. It has about 131000 miles. I also think it may need to a new battery but not 100% sure.

If the battery voltage is low you will get codes and warnings coming up. On mine when the battery needs recharging the abs dcslight comes on.
Check the voltage on the battery it has to be over 12.6 v.
