problem with 2001 s-type 4.0
I have a 2001 S-type v-8 4.0... I'm having an issue with a misfire. I have read all the post and chased each possible solution. The misfire is supposedly on 7 and 8 and occasionally 3. i have pulled the coil's and swapped them around 7-8 still won't fire. i have checked continuity from the PCM to each coil. Checked out ok. The other wire is ignition power which I also verified. But won't fire. i took both spark plugs out plugged them into the coil and started the car without them installed just kinda resting there. so i can see the tip of the plug. with engine running sounding like a drag car(two spark plugs pulled) I see no spark at the tip? Also tried this with brand new plugs. and with new coil. Am i doing something wrong? from what i am thinking the problem is the PCM not telling the coil to fire? Any other thoughts. I really don't wanna waste more money on this not too fix it. My wife bought it really cheap thinking her freind would take care of it and fix it. His attempt 3 cam tensioners and 2 new coils and 950 dollars later it is doing the same. So i'm not trying to throw more good money after the wrong thing again. I'm a heavy truck mechanic....don't know very much when it comes to cars and gasoline engines. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. codes i usually come up with are p300 codes for mostly 7-8 and 3. I recently cleared them and now the only code I have is p1151. It runs like crap constantly but not always trigger codes?

P1151 is an O2-related fault. See the codes PDF for details.
One thing with the misfires is that they can be a sign of a failing battery, as a large current needs to be available instantly. As you can't realistically test the battery to be sure whether it could be this, maybe try an extra one if you have one the right voltage.

I believe the spark plug will need to be grounded for the spark to jump the gap while you have it out of the engine. I've been taught not to let the spark plug go ungrounded with the engine firing. The high voltage will not have anywhere to go and could destroy the coil pack. You may want to read up on how to check the coil resistance to see if they are within specs.
Good luck finding your non-fire issue. Hopefully it's as simple as replacing the battery.

Be careful about checking coils. They will not check bad for the most part. Ford had so many problems with replacing good coils they started issuing a coil stress tester to their dealers to properly test coils. Any other method will not be reliable. When in doubt just change the coil. Much cheaper and they are a wear item.

Thank you bfs i will take a look and see. I'm pretty sure its a "maintanance free" battery. I don't think it is vented either come to think of it....

no i have no spark. I was just told i can't check the battery. The running out of fuel i honestly don't know i obtained the vehicle with this issue.

Why can’t you check the battery or do you think it does not need checking? Your battery can be checked! Take it to AutoZone, Sears, PepBpys and ask them to do a load check. Once that is done and if the battery test good you will need to see why you have no spark. If the coils have been swapped with a working coil and the problem remains at the same plug then you need to check the wiring to the coil pack.

This is a oneline for your car http://jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepa...x2022001en.pdf look at Fig 03.2 that should be a good start.
