Firstly welcome.
Your car is an early version, known as an X200, and has the Ford 5R55N transmission fitted.
These units had issues, mainly from contaminated fluid, due to the STUPID sealed for life tag attached.
The fluid needs changing every 80000kms or so, or 5 years if the car is used little.
Wear in the bore of the servo pistons also caused issues.
I would suggest changing the fluid, simply drop it out, and refill with fresh fluid. I did a write up on this a while ago, and it is in the "stickies" at the top of this section.
When the old fluid is drained, inspect it for metal "bits", and if that is found the transmission needs rebuilding. Being a Ford transmission, the $$ will not be too bad, even in Tripoly.
The gear select cable is known to stretch, and even slip out of the crimped end ferrules. There is a TSB in the same top section about this.

It is a "Ford Family" of transmission.
I dont know of Fords that run that transmission. The Explorer ran the 5R55E, and NOTHING from each unit fits the other.
You would need to find a 5R55N unit, and then a s/hand may be as bad as the one you got.
Not sure of transmission repair places where you call home, but down here there are plenty, and this "Ford" trans is cheap to overhaul. including all the updated bits.
That is the path I will take if either of my 2 need it.
That select cable would be a smart idea, and if it makes NO change, at least you now have the "updated" select cable.

Bugga.
OK, dirty hands time.
Drain that fluid, the drain plug is on the LH front lower corner of the pan.
Measure what came out, it should be AROUND (approximately in some languages) 5litres.
Inspect that old fluid for "gunk", as in metal bits.
If that old fluid is BLACK like old engine oil, you got problems.
Decission time is now here based on what you find.
1) Dirty/grubby oil:
Refill with 5litres of fresh fluid, drive it about 25kms, drop it again, and refill it again, do the same after about 100kms, and IF the trans appears to be getting "better", keep doing this drop and refill until what comes out is about the same colour as the stuff going in. THEN drop the pan and replace the filter and its o/rings, and refill it again.
IF after 2 drop and refills there is NO change to the transmissions behaviour, stop wasting money and go onto step #2 below.
Do this filter again after about 80K to 100K kms, and enjoy the car.
2) Metal/stuff in the muck you drained out:
Remove the transmission and get it rebuilt and updated.
There is NO "quickie" fix for it IF it has gone that far, and is a reflection of previous lousy maintenence.
Both of mine had very grubby fluid, and now after 8 drop and refills, using Full Synthetic Fluid, they are as SMOOTH as I would ask of any transmission, BUT, their behaviour when we first got them was sad indeed, such as unwilling to change down, shuddering on upshift, etc.
My "magic wand" is fresh out of poewer with this transmission. I hope the fluid refresh works.
Automatic transmissions are all smoke and mirrors to me, apart from the basic fluid/filter bit, and the knowledge that the fluid MUST be maintained as fresh. The only auto trans I have ever rebuilt was in 1969 when my brothers Dodge PowerFlite 2 speed became a 1 speed, and that scared me off working on them for life.
NOTE:
The fill plug is on the rear of the transmission on the RH side, up high on the rear face, facing the rear of the car, and is 10mm hex key plug. You will NOT see it (unless on a hoist), but if you feel around up there you easily feel it.
