Problem programming S-type keys
Hey all. Here is my story with no happy ending yet. After reading about other's problems programming S-type keys I still needed an extra key or two. I bought my 2002 S-type 3.0L v6 a little over a year ago, totally rebuilt the suspension, replaced the valve cover gaskets etc. to stop oil leaks, had the tranny serviced but still needed extra keys. I am in NC north of Charlotte. I started calling locksmiths and kept hearing we do any car except Jaguar even though they say they cut tibbe keys. I finally found a guy out of Charlotte that said he could cut keys for me. I got two flip keys with the integral fob for convenience. When I went to him, he was nervous about programming the new keys because he had heard of problems with S-types going dead. He started by cutting and cloning a key blank that he had and that worked. He then cut my two flip keys but didn't want to try programming. When I first got my car I called the local Jaguar dealer in Charlotte about service but was rudely told that they would not work on any car that was more than ten years old; very snobby. I then found a local service shop that specialized in European cars and was told they had all the dealer programming for my S-type. I took my car there with my one original key and two new flip keys. They suggested that they had had trouble in the past getting after market keys to work with the S-type in particular but would try. Long story shortened now.... my car is dead in their shop with no keys working. Beware. They have no idea how to get it rebooted to any key. I should have been happy with the cloned key but I got greedy.
S-type owners... I think we need to band together and take out a class action law suit against Jaguar because our model seems to be the only one that has this problem when trying to program new keys to the car. How many of you have had this problem? My local service shop said that this had happened before with an S-type but they were able to get that one to talk back to the original key but mine won't. HELP!!!

Never had an issue when configuring keys to the X200.
You DO need 2 keys minimum but can config up to 5.
Never tried a 'flip-key' from the X202 and maybe THAT is where the fault lies.
The RFID needs to match the car's requirements and maybe the MEGAMOS 'chip' is incorrect for your car?
In that case you only have ONE key and it won't accept ONE key for config.
I have witnessed the 'foil-wrap' trick with another customer car RFID to 'fool' the car into having 2 keys, but I never felt comfortable with the 'hack'.

Sorry to hear about your situation, and especially that a Jaguar dealer won' work on cars over 10 years old (and we wonder why Jaguar has the problems it has). I had the one-key dilemma that I detailed in a recent post on this forum. The locksmith I was using got me an afrermarket "flip" key and cut it, but didn't have the equipment to program it. Went to my local dealer and 1/2-hour and $ 175 later I had a second working key. The early S-Type security systems don't have a very good reputation in that regard. The locksmith I went to advised me that the Ford Transit vans use a Tibbe key and a complex security system which he works with all the time without a problem.

adding lawyers. I know plenty that got worse, but never better.
Start a class action lawsuit, and if successful, ten years down the road you get a coupon for $30 off a new Jaguar. Meanwhile, a whole team of lawyers can afford new yachts. Just ain’t worth it.
So on a practical level, look beyond your local area. Call dealers in adjacent states and ask if they make keys. If so, pack an overnight bag and go on a fun little trip. Brace yourself to pay the $400 (or whatever the going rate may be) and accept it as part of the trade off for not driving a Prius.

My guess from the description you have given is that you may not have two of the correct key fob transmitters for your year of car.
I could be wrong but I do not think the later ones will work on the early cars.
The process to add a new key requires the old keys to be deleated from the car first and then re-added with the new keys if required.
With only one correct key present when programming the process can not be compleated and none will be added. You end up with no keys programmed to the car.
I think what you need is at least one more correct key/fob for your year of car, not a later type, then try programming again with the two correct ones and the process should complete.
If this is your problem it is hardly jaguars fault that you have the wrong later type key/fobs.

I have used SDD and cheap chinese keys off EBay with no problems. I would stop messing with cloned keys. It's a substandard way to add a key and be aware that the car thinks it's still the same key so none of the programmed stuff will change when using the two keys. In other words both keys will set the seats/mirrors to the same positions because to the car those are identical keys. That might not be a problem for you?
Is there anyway you can find someone with a working SDD in your area?
Correct with only 1 working key the first step in SDD is to erase ALL the keys from the car and start over. Even SDD has big red letters at this point to make SURE you really want to do this. Then you can start adding keys back to the vehicle including the original one you just erased.
Listen to M-E-L-L-O-W as you must get the correct key blanks to start with. I see them for around $15 each all over EBay. These are uncut Tibbe keys.
1. Purchase new chinese fob and flip key that is uncut.
2. Cut Tibbe key to match the car. Be sure and check that it does turn in the ignition. When programming the transponder you will be inserting the new key and turning it on several times so it must be cut BEFORE you start any programming.
3. I know you know this but it is confusing. The push buttons are for the FOB which is separate from the transponder key. Adding and programming FOBS is much simpler and you don't need to use SDD for that. Although SDD will do it and that is my preferred method since I have a working SDD setup.
I think we need to remember this is NOT a Jaguar issue. The regulations to prevent car theft get tougher every year. In fact it appears with the move to Pathfinder from SDD that unless you somehow can get factory access (which means an internet connection while attached to the car) you can't add keys anymore. Dealer only no matter what!

After flying over these threads here and searching the internet for a long time - I am still not sure...: reg. S-Type 2004 / 2005:
1. ) Am I correct in assuming that (if you have 2 original keys) there is not problem at all to self-program the transponder of two further keys (after having those tibbe-keys cut)? I have to be correct there. I just did it on the 2004, after I did it 2 years earlier on the 2005 S-Type.
2.) And am I also correct in assuming that there is no way to self-program the flip-key-remotes (FOB) on S-Type 2004/2005? I had it done on the 2005 by a specialist-locksmith, who has a AU$5000 device to do it...

I don't know anything about "JLR sdd software and vci of mongoose pro".
Can you please dumb it down for me? What would I need? I have a normal laptop.
How many $ worth of extra equipment and software would I have to invest?
As I wrote: I have a solution for getting the flip keys, and I have the transponders already tuned into the car.
So I have 2 original keys (one of the remotes does not work anymore properly). But I have a new chip for the remote.
I copied 2 further key (tibbe), so I have now 4 keys with the transponder tuned in, so those 4 keys can drive the car.
And the last time I drove my other S-Type to a place 90km away and had 3 FOBs programmed for AU$50.

Dopey is the Vic master in duplicating S-Type keys. He is the go-to guy in and around Melb for anyone in need of a spare.

Peter great to see you posting and learning!
Maybe take a look at the massive SDD threads we have? Just a note but these got out of hand and the mods are trying to keep the WDS/IDS and SDD/Pathfinder stuff together as it's so complicated.
Have you read any of these long winded threads??
SDD Info
More SDD Info
I agree strongly with scottjh9 above!! I can't do the work I need to without SDD despite all it's limitations and complexity.
You do know that programming the FOBS is very simple compared to the key transponder stuff? Should not need to take it anywhere for just the FOB programming.

Thanks, clubairth1 and scottjh9,
thanks for the info. I guess it will be a while until I get to that stage.
Well, I self-programmed my transponders (I think it was 1st original key in, ign. on, off, out, 2nd original key in, ign on, off, out and then new & cut 3rd key (with blank transponder) in, ign on, off, & start. And same procedure for the 4th key. So my transponders are all fine. But all the magic tricks/procedures I found on the net for remote (FOB) programming were in vain.
My 2nd S-Type (2004) is now pretty much finished (restored), just the finial touch up on the frt. facia redesign, then wheel alignment, then dumping the Nulon ATF and putting lifeguard 6 in. But as I have currently too many cars registered, I will wait for a nice date, namely the 22.2.2023 to register the 2004 S-Type, and then face the tough choice of which car not to register anymore, until it is 30 years old (and cheap to register). After the 22.2. I will drive the distance to the locksmith to pair the FOBS with the Jag.
