Default Property Tax Value....

The annual North Carolina property tax bill for my 2005 S-Type 3.0 arrived in yesterday's mail. The state values my car at an even $5,000 and is taxing me based upon that figure. The bill is due by November 30th....

I in turn will dispute that figure through my county's tax office and will submit recent sale amounts as evidence that they are significantly overvaluing my car. I was successful in this endeavor involving my wife's 2006 XK8 several years ago after my Diminished Value claim and look forward to a favorable resolution in this case as well. We shall see....

Well that is one silver lining for the low value of the S Type!

Property taxes here are now generally limited to real estate and motorized vehicles (autos, motorcycles, boats, airplanes, etc.)....

I remember a time decades ago when intact purebred male dogs were taxed, supposedly for their stud value....

South Carolina has the same tax - my 2000 XK8 is $18/year while the 2017 XE is $524

Here it's done as VED (vehicle excise duty) and loosely is based on the price band of the car when new (it depends on the year it was new too).

A 2004 STR is £285 (about $380) per year.

A jump in bands means a 2005 would be a lot more.

Perhaps the State of North Carolina would be willing to purchase your S-Type for the 5,000$US they claim is the value...?

California adds an ad valorem tax (Latin meaning "according to the worth") to the yearly registration fee. Fortunately it drops considerably as a car ages. $16 for ad valorem part of the registration for my STR this year. New cars I have had in the past have run over $1,000 annually.

GA used to do that, but a few years ago they changed it to a 1-time 7% sales tax. Last year I successfully disputed their high value with the bill of sale disputed as evidence.

I should have mentioned that almost none of our taxes are local ones (so-called "council tax" is a notable exception; it depends on the value of each house).

VED is charged by central government.
