RE: pros and cons on 2000 s type
I own one. Love it.
I've serviced all the touchy points:
New sway bar bushings
New coolant tank
New heater valve
Upgraded the cam chain tensioners
Ceramic pads to kill the dust
Next up is to replace the trans fluid before it gets bad and cooks the tranny.
I get 32mpg on flat freeway at 55mph. I average 16.7 mpg with city thrown in. The V6 is no better but these days it could actually sell better with gas prices being what they are. Most people don't know the mpg difference is quite small and it's all in how you drive it.
BUT
Buy it and understand it isn't a Toyota. It a powerful, quiet, exceptionally well built machine that DEMANDS service from day one.

Have a 4.0, check that the tensioners have been replaced if you decide on the 4.0. If not your in for a hefty bill when they fail. Also window regulators fail but they break within 50,000 miles so that should not be a problem. when everything works right the damn car is great. I love it. I get 20 MPG but I do about 80% highway.

I've got a 2000 S-Type 3.0, love to drive it, I get 23 mpg around town and 31 mpg on a run cruising at 75ish Ive had a couple of window regulators go on it but apart from that no probs.
Mine has all of the features listed above plus a few others including the built in phone and the voice recognition system similar to the Microsoft Sync that ford offer on their cars now and the Premium Sound Package.
A good fun car, pleanty of power if you want it (especially in sport mode) and smooth comfortable ride.
Go Buy It!!!!

its kind of funny that "COSWORTH" mentioned toyota in his post because ive always drove them(4x4 trucks, cars, lowrider trucks)...........i am in the prosses of getting one reimbursed(97 tacoma 4x4,with 33's) due to a frame recall(on all 1995-2000 tacoma's)150% of blue book!!!!!!!! wich is about $10,200 ,no joke!!!!!(i payed 3,500 for it)..well i am waiting on the check, and WILL buy an s type.!!!!!!! iv'e loved them since i was little and its time to ride in style!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i also have a yota prodject!!!ongoing.its a 1990 yota pickup.im putting air bags on it ,doing a 4 inch body drop,20's and it will lay doors!and yes i do like toyota's for certain things but as far as ive came in my life i deserve and am ready for some "class"

if u can afford to spend the $10,2 + a little more id encourage you to get an 03 or newer, the mechanicals are sig. redesigned as well as a totally diff dash. Check out texascarsdirect.com i personally highly recc. them. they are in Dallas but for what youre getting plus another $1,000 you get a much newer example, with a factory pre owned extended warranty and less miles! you cant go wrong! there are very few things the CPO warranty doesnt cover. Plus the 03s are known to be much more sound overall. ( of course it depends how well they were maintained to start out with!)

My advice is don't jump on the first option. Check out all your options and see what the best choice is. Texascarsdirect has lots of choices and they have really really good prices. Just check the car out with a fine tooth comb and you can always offer lower and see what happens...

RE: pros and cons on 2000 s type
fromragstojags,
I owned an '00 S-Type 4.0 much more pick up than the V6. Mine had the sports package and the CATS suspension...great car. But, as another member stated, it isn't as sound as the '03+ models AND when you go to gun it, that year was known for its slight delay, or hesitance, to engage. It drove me nuts. Before going to a Jag, I was a die-hard Beemer guy (owned 5 of them) and my last one was an M3 a rocket.
Now I have an '03 S-Type 4.2 that I purchased new. There is no comparison. If you can, I would look at an '03 or newer. More powerful, smoother shifts, quieter body integrity, and interior styling that is in keeping with the Jag brand. Feels more like a Jag.
Good luck!

Hi,
I 've owned my 2000 3L SE from new and its been a great car. I haven't driven a newer S-type ( 2003 + ) but it might be worht looking at them as they appear to be a further refinement of an already great package. Other than regular maintenace, I've had to replace 2 window regulators and the coolant overflow bottle. Both were easy repairs. I'm planning to change my ATF soon but have had no AT problems after 67K miles. Best wishes to you in getting an S-Type, you'll love it.
