I would find out what has been done on this car before you buy. One good place is to check with the Jaguar dealer where it was serviced. You should also do a carfax on the vehicle. It can show how many times it has been to the dealer in addition to accident history.
I have heard that the transmissions can be problematic. I also heard that the 2000-02 models have a lot of electrical problems as well. There are always exceptions, however. I opted to purchase a 2003 model as a result. I have heard that my year isn't the greatest, but I can afford the car.
I believe that you are wise to go with the 3.0 L version as the 4.0's tend to be more problematic.
I am sure that others will chime in with a lot more info that I can provide, so good luck and hope that the car turns out good.
