Question from a potential STR owner..
Hey guys...just have a quick question reguarding the STR..why are they so cheap? i am coming off a 95 Mustang GT 5.0 and felt like i needed something with 4doors,power and luxury...all of which the STR provides quite nicely. Now i know about Jaguars iffy reputation for reliablity, but has the ford take off improved them or rectified that issue at all?
the STR is a beauty of a car and i cant help but wonder why they are so cheap...i dont want to drop $13-14000 on a car that will just give me loads of problems...are they reliable at all?? and are they really that expensive to fix?? imput would be greatly appreicated..as i am ready to grab one of these beasts...

Their awesome to look at, drive, and fast. Like all cars, a specimen that has been taken cared of will be your best bet, basically a reliable well screwed together car. Why so "cheap" ($$$)? Ford owned Jaguar, the line was more or less an afterthought when it came to marketing and development. I use my modded 03 STR both to commute and embarass BMW's, MB's, and American muscle. Get her and join us!

I was thinking the same thing as you. I looked everywhere at all the data on the cars and they came back relatively problem free. Now as for the cheap price, I attribute that to a couple of things. First, ask anyone what they think about a Jag and they will tell you that Jag owners have two cars, the Jag, and one they drive when the Jag is in the shop. Everyone still has the image of a problematic car. Two, Jag is thought of as an old man car. Just like Cadillac was, only bought by old people, Jag has that stigma also. Doesn't bother me though, I picked up a really good 03 STR for a great price!

Both the S-type and S-type R are great cars. We've had no issues AT ALL and have plenty of fun. If you want a car with slightly better handling, the R is the way to go, and I always think it looks a little more aggresive in a cool way. You'll find the ride and handling much better than the Mustang, Jaguar are famous for creating a happy medium between good ride and good handling.
Oh not to mention, you'll never get bored of that supercharger whine!!!!
My only advice is go with the 4.2 if you can. After 2003 they did some great improvements.
Why so cheap? It's no longer a current model and cars of that calibre always depreciate badly for the first 3-4 years.
Enjoy.

If the car has been well maintained and gone over it should be very reliable.
Just make sure you have it gone over very well and be prepared to fix little (some might be costly) things upfront if the previous owner wasnt very attentive.
After that it should mostly just be regular maintenance.
Also for about the past year prices havent declined much/ at all really on S-Types or XJs due to the fact lots of us Jaguar people really dont care for the XF or new XJ as a replacement since the styling is so different.

I'm with you on the XF and XJ not my cup of tea.
My next Jag will be an XKR. I don't need a four door anymore and this is really Jags sports car.
