Default Rattle from flywheel?

Hello guys I have a 2000 3.0 se auto S type and have an annoying rattle.....

Been to a friends workshop today and had it up on a ramp and the noise is definatly coming from flywheel area.

On idle its OK but when in drive or reverse it rattles, doesn't change with revs of engine and disappears under load once driving but just driving around slowly its there.

Cant hear it with the windows closed.

Trans fluid is good, it sounds like flywheel is touching something at low revs.

Any one got any ideas?

Thanks Dave

If it's touching there should be shiny marks on the flex plate somewhere.

Have you pulled the starter to inspect it?

My 2 cents from way down here.

Mates XK8 (I know totally different car) had this annying rattle IDENTICAL to what you are describing.

So 4 opinions later, it was deemed the torque convertor had issues.

I suggesting getting at it with a rubber mallet and bashing the cats, as that will also give that same sound under the same conditions. Nope, all sweet.

So the process of removing the transmission began. the exhaust had to be split for removal, and when the cats were removed, the LH unit had internally died, and bits of whatever were rattling around. Replaced the cat, trans remained in place, rattle GONE. Saved himself much $$, happy camper.

You also may be so lucky.

Had a smash around today with a rubber mallet as I have seen the cats can cause problems but no joy, no shiny marks can be seen through the small panel to remove bolts that I assume hold flywheel to torque convertor as for the starter didn't even think of that but the sound could almost be the solenoid not retracting enough after start?

Is the starter easy to remove?

Would need to hear the noise but I have ran into several 5R55s with noisy pumps when in gear. Does it make the noise in park or neutral?

not in park or neutral, pop it into drive and it starts until you pull away and reach about 2000 revs or so.
