I'm pretty sure we use a standard for 8.8.. The whine could very possibly be road noise from your new tires.. What brand/model are they? Also does your rear make a clunking noise when you put it in drive from reverse? On the up side, breaking your diff would be an excellent excuse to upgrade to an LSD.. Eric

anyone break our rear ends???
Sorry I meant to write *Ford 8.8* .. Like the ones they use in Cobras, Mustangs, Lincoln LS's, and Explorers. Rears are not sized by how many bolts they have, thats just a chevy thing.. Like on the side of my house right now I have a Chevy 12-Bolt, a Dana 60, a Ford 9", a Mopar 9 1/4 and an 8 3/4.. All makes have their own nicknames for their rears. The size 8.8" refers to the diameter of the ring gear.. These cars make so little power that an 8.8" is more than big enough. Guys easily put 600rwhp through 8.8's, compared to the 340rwhp we put down, haha I think you'll be okay. Your the first person I've heard of that thinks they blew it up in an STR.. I beat the absolute hell out of mine and it's still fine. I've driven my car sideways through a whole airport and it still doesn't make any noise. I guess we'll wait to hear what happens with your.. Do you have any leaks on it?

Here are some options to consider.. http://www.ringpinion.com/PartsList....b-Differential

Default Tsb

Greg,

There is a TSB out for S diffs. The TSB indicates a whine will
be present about 61 mph. Jag's solution? Replace the rear end
diff. I know...I had it done under warranty.

Here is the TSB on this:

I'm getting the same whine on my 2005 S-Type at about 60 mph.

Mike,

Are you going to pursue this TSB with your dealership?

And what's your current mileage?

Hi Jon,

Yes, I am going to get with one of my local dealers on this. The mileage on my 2005 S-Type is around 52K. I have the Certified Extended Warranty so I need to find out what my deductible is as well as getting all my ducks in order before getting the work done.

Thanks Mike. Keep us posted on this issue. I haven't noticed the whine but my wife drives this car 85% of the time, at least up until yesterday afternoon. See my post last night on our car going into "limp mode" while she was leaving work yesterday. Her trust in the S-Type is now shot and I hope that our Jaguar techs can gain it back, otherwise I'm stuck with a vehicle that she won't drive and I don't need....

I've got an 03 STR that makes the whine once in a while too. Usually around 45-65mph. It does it when the car is maintaining the same speed. Never makes the noise during deceleration or acceleration. I figured it was just one of those quirks that Jaguars have. It could also be the tires....mine are getting low on tread and I've noticed a lot more road noise and a lower pitched "hum" at certain speeds that could only be attributed to the tires.

I had an Infinity J30 RWD that did the same thing the entire time I owned it. I put 172K miles on that thing and never had a problem with the rear end. Actually, i never had a problem with anything on that car.... I wish I could say the same for my STR!! Jesus.

I also had a Mustang Cobra that did the exact same thing and nothing went wrong with that rear end either...and I put 155K miles on that car.

Anyway...unless the noise bugs you so much that you can't take it anymore...I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure your fluid is good and you don't have any clunking sounds coming from the rear end.

Although, if your warranty covers a new rear end...I'd say go for it. As for me though...it's not loud enough or often enough to really care. And the car was just in the dealer for routine stuff and passed inspections with flying colors...so yeah...

Hi Scottie,

That's pretty much what mind does also. It has the whine at about 45 mph and then again around 60 or so and only at a steady speed. Like yours, if you put a load on it or coast, the whine stops. Also, it goes away above around 65 or so. So far, no clunks or other nasty noises.

Wink

The whine is clearly present in my STR at all speeds when "she who must be obeyed" occupies the passenger seat. The whine is even louder in her X-Type at all speeds when I occupy the passenger seat.

Hmmmm...

Mine also has the "bitch" and "nag" function, and more than one day

LOL...you guys crack me up! I decided not to order the "bitch & nag" option, and thus far have been very pleased with that decision.

Sounds like the whine (from the car) is relatively normal and harmless....the other whine, not so much. lol.

I rebuilt the one in my family's 2000 s-type. It whined slightly and only got worse there after. About a month later, I got sick of it and roasted the tires until it blew up. The parts were pretty hard to find, everyone wanted to sell a complete unit, which I did not want. Although, for a complete unit, the price wasn't too bad.
