Right, too, about the compound....but I assume that rubber compound is one of the factors....probably a major factor.... that enters into the assignment of a rating.

While it's entirely plausible that some "400" tires might outlast some "600" tires, it's a fair bet that that the extremes of the rating scale are useful....and a "600" tire will almost certainly outlast a "200" tire, all else being equal.

Yes, I agree and use the ratings as a guide as well. I just also try to find out as much about the compound as I can as well. That is much harder to get. Reviews are helpful, but not all tires have been reviewed by an "un-biased" reviewer. I, myself, have been looking at replacing my tires and it is increasingly hard to get "true" data.

Any good info sources anyone may have, please post since it will help many of us, including the original poster..

Hard data is ....well...hard to find :-).

Tires are like motor oil. Lot's of subjectivity, lots of prejudice, and lots of apples-to-oranges comparisons. There are so many variables.

I know people that had a problem with [insert brand name here] tires 30 years ago and are *still* badmouthing the brand as though it happened yesterday :-)

I find the Tire Rack reviews helpful to some extent...if there are enough responses to see a trend. If 12 out of 20 people remark that, let's say, the tire is noisier than expected, there's probably some truth to it. If only 2 or 3 make the same complaint I'd shrug it off.

My experiences with low profile tires (below 55-series, usually) over many years and several cars, and a lifetime working in the auto repair industry, has been generally negative. That is, the benefits do not outweigh the negatives. But...experiences and tolerance levels vary :-).

And....requirements change. When i was driving 5k miles/year, tires giving 18-20k miles tread life didn't bother me a bit. Now that I drive 22k miles/year.....well.....now it's a different story :-). Buying a new set of tires every 10-11 months is too rich for my blood.

Ramble switch turned "off" :-)

Doug, I agree with most that you say... Except that I wouldn't necessarily classify my experience with lower profile tires as "negative".. But that just stresses that all these tire conversations are really a matter of preference...

Now if I could just get your car, please...... I may have an S, and do like it, but my favorites by far are the XJR and XJS.....Just a little jealous...LOL
