Why did the valve seats drop? Was the engine overheated?

+1 on getting a used engine from a breaker's yard.

Yes, do tell, I have that engine also.
That's going to take a bit more than bananas and sawdust to fix.

Sometimes it’s better the devil you know anyway. At least you will know the true condition of this engine because you rebuilt it yourself. If you don’t cut corners and do a thorough and careful job you will have peace of mind. If you can find the dough, do the ‘while I’ve got it apart’ jobs (e.g. Timing chain and tensioners. Check all the valve guides, seats, oil seals, piston rings, etc.).
Good luck. I don’t envy you the job of rebuilding a V8 engine that is shoehorned into a space barely big enough for a V6.

Here is a link to the X202 Workshop Manual:

Here is a link to the Engine Repair Course:

Pay particular attention to the information on valve timing outlined on page 74 of the PDF (page 26 of the course). Correct timing is 45 degrees ATDC, not TDC.

Two other points on the AJ33:
  1. Under no circumstances is the crankshaft to be rotated in an anti clock direction as damage to the main and rod bearing is the result when viewed from the front. This may not apply in your situation since you intend to overhaul the engine.
  2. DO NOT use the crankshaft holding tool to hold the crankshaft whilst removing the front pulley 24mm bolt as damage to the timing disc is possible.
