receiver / drier location

The desiccant bag is inside the receiver/dryer. In fact the bag IS the dryer and holds whatever mositure is pushed thru it until it's saturated. The receiver is just the can the bag is housed in.
The idea is to flood or soak the bag with liquid refrigerant most or all of the time. This maximizes the ability of the bag to absorb the moisture that is contaminating the refrigerant.

Any idea what that bag thing is? Is it some internal part of the "condenser"? I see a fairly ordinary (I hesitate to say normal) receiver/drier in the parts diagram. Never heard of those being disassembled but besides it does not appear to be part of the condenser as that bag apparently is.

Ok, I went back and looked at the Discount ac parts website again for a 2001 S Type and it does show the conventional dryer receiver unit as does JTIS so I think the bad was a facelift mod.
I hope so, I've got a compressor to change sometime soon and I was planning on doing the valve and bag at the same time.

Check the prices at discount ac parts, they sell the individual items as well as kits.

You have a 2004 and I have a 2005 so check that there is not a silver canister on the passenger side of the engine somewhere. If not then you have the bag like I do.
The dryer is inside the tank attached to the A/C condenser radiator at the front of the car. This tank is on the passenger side of the car. There is a hex plug you remove from the bottom of the tube and then the bag will come out. Getting to this hex is not real easy but I was not going to remove the condenser!

See this thread for more information but you are right that the change was not very well known and it threw me for a while too!!

Second item. Unless you are in need of a really bad mechanic job I would leave it alone. If you follow the A/C lines where they enter the firewall you can just see a little bit of the expansion valve. JTIS says the dash has to come out.
The only reason to change it is if it gets clogged. This is why I recommend changing your compressor BEFORE it lets go. The very last thing you want in your A/C system is debris.
It's almost impossible to flush our A/C systems because the S Type has what's known as a split evaporator core. This is because we have dual climate control that allows a different temperature for each side of the car. With this split core you have no way of flushing the core because the flush can bypass any blockage and just go to the other side.

Thanks for your reply.
Yesterday I could not find the drier or the expansion valve so I decided to put on the new compressor and charge the system. Everything went well with the installation and pulling a vacuum but after 2/3 of the Freon something popped. Oil spurted out behind the compressor. I am out of town today and can not check exactly where the leak is.
It may be from a line or ?????
Thanks again, I did see the tube on side of the the condenser, so now I know where that is, also thanks for heads up on the location of the expansion valve and letting me know that replacing it is a major major headache.
Also I see that the dual system is a major drawback as it can't be flushed.
Wow! I have had fun and struggled through some significant projects on my S-Type and I love the car, but I see that I should not have tackled the AC.
