Default Recovery tank

I've got an '01 S-Type. A few days ago it started leaking anti-freeze from under the recovery tank. When I pulled the cap there wasn't much pressure so I was thinking the cap might not be sealing well (I should have searched here first!). I changed the cap and no-go. Next I figured the recovery tank was probably cracked because everything else looked fine and I maintain the system by changing coolant every 2 years (a bit of overkill I guess but cheap insurance). Again, I should have searched because obviously this is a common problem. My recovery tank has cracks in three sides (hairline cracks).

Here is my question..... I bought the car used in 2003 so I don't really now the history from '01 to '03. When I pulled out the recovery tank I noticed the harness that goes to the sensor on the top of the tank was disconnected and neatly taped off. Also there was a fitting on the top of the tank (the one closest to the firewall) that had no hose on it. There was a rubber house mount over the fitting and the end of that hose was plugged off but nothing was plumbed to this tank fitting and it is open to the outside. What is the deal? Was there a TSB of some sort on this? Is my tank sealing with this opening or is this nothing more than the "blow off"if the pressure gets too high.

Any info would be appreciated. I have to go see my dealer for a new tank tomorrow. Also, any chance the LS uses the same tank? It may be cheaper from Ford and the Ford dealer is much closer to me (5 minutes vs. 45 minutes). Thanks. - Cliff

Default RE: Recovery tank

I probed the fitting with a small screw driver and it is not open like I thought. Must be for another application.

Still curious about the level sensor being taped off. Thanks.

my 01 has a same thing, no hose goes on that nipple, beware that 01 4.0 all have history of the recovery tank developing stress cracks and leaking radiator fluid , the way the tank is mounted you cant see the cracked tank unless you remove it, its not an easy thing to do, I burned up an engine when wife continued to drive with temp. went high and melted the motor, all due to leak in recovery tank.
