Default Renew the Upper Rear Control Arms

Remove rear wheel.

Pry spring clip anchor for ABS wiring loom from the control arm.

Disconnect the ABS Sensor connector.

Fit a floor jack under the hub and a bottle jack between the disc brake caliper and the trailing edge of the lower sill...or don't, but you'll wish you had later.
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a..._141932431.jpg
Remove the fixing nut under the ball joint using an 18mm spanner and, if necessary, 8mm spanner for anti-drive.

Carefully adjust the bottle-jack and the floor-jack as necessary until the ball joint threaded shaft pops up out of the hub.

Remove the other two control arm fixing bolts using 18mm socket and 18mm backing spanner for anti-drive.

Bob's yer uncle and the control arm is free and clear!

Installation is accomplished by conducting the same steps in reverse order.
However, just fit the two control arm fixing bolts in their holes and start the nut as far as it will go prior to the locking feature becoming active. THEN, adjust the jacks again until the ball-joint stud falls into place through it's proper hole in the hub. You may even find you have need of fixing a large spanner to the hub with a hand-tightened lugnut for that final bit of persuasion to get proper alignment for that ball-joint stud to drop in place. (I used a 15/16" spanner)

Start the ball-joint nut. These control arms provided fresh locking nuts for the ball joint fitment, but they required a 19mm spanner, and the anti-drive feature was more properly 5/16" though I used an 8mm without issue as my 5/16" combo was MIA.

Snug all three control arm fixing nuts to eliminate any slack, but do not tighten.

Complete the rest of the steps in reverse-order, including refitting the tire/wheel assy.

The control arm fixing bolts should be torqued to 98nm with weight on wheels.

The ball-joint nut gets 90nm, again, with weight on wheels.

Good luck with those last two steps. R&R took about 30 min / per side. Final torque-up took all afternoon! I slid my 20 ton air/hyd jack under the pumpkin and put it FDAU and positioned my ramps under the rear wheels, then lowered it onto the ramps. I can't begin to recall the collection of extensions/wobbles etc. required to bring a deepwell socket to bear on the forward nut. On the aft, it was a deepwell 18mm and a 6" extension. For the ball joint - You can use a box or open-end. I used the box and declared 90nm equivalent to "all I can put on it using one hand in as awkward a position as you can possibly imagine. Tool access for sevice wasn't priority #1 in this design.

Great set of instructions, Zane. Did these new upper rear control arms quiet the suspension noises down at all?

Thanks Jon,
Not the knocking that I mentioned in your thread - I'm persuaded that originates up front, or at least forward of center. It did eliminate the rusty-bed-springs squeaking when you mount or dismount the car, or cruise over sleeping policemen in neighborhoods or shopping malls. That noise was likely there full-time, but only noticeable at slow-speed.

Bushes on both sides were shot, ball-joints still tight and quiet, but rubbers mostly gone so would've been fool's gold to spring for new bushes and sweat and fart pressing old out and new in perfectly square like we did with the lowers. I was only getting the squeaky noise from the left side, but the bushes on the right arm look and feel just as knackered.
Depression-era parents, so I abhor waste and although ball-joints "not replaceable" I will hold the arms on-station in hopes a ball-joint renewal kit becomes available. The experience I have made, is that whatever I have to renew on the 03, I'll get another go at on the 05 within 3 years time, if not sooner.

Well Rick....I keep hoping each failure will be a one-off, oddball outlier that won't be repeated on the other car...but so far, they track together close as twins! Ah well, I pray they don't copy that "other" 03 I recently obtained to use for parts - it has a loud and cantankerous piston rod that keeps trying to tell me a "knock-knock" joke every time I fire it up....think my wife would call that "a jerk...." but it's a V-8, so hopefully not in the bloodlines of my other two.
