Default Replace caliper bolts?

I changed out my front STR rotors for a new set of drilled rotors yesterday and noticed in the AllData.com instructions it said to replaced the caliper mounting bolts rather than reuse the originals. Is this really necessary?

Thanks,
Stan Vann

Define "really necessary" LOL

Yes, you're supposed to.
Nobody but me seems to do (not quite true, not least because my local dealer does). They have a specific kind of thread lock on them so rather than guess the right kind I just replace as per the JTIS etc instructions.

Just like jagv8 says it says to per JTIS but I dont. The only time I replace them is if I cant get them torqued properly. Out of all the brakes I've replaced I've only replaced the hardware on one which was not my car. I had recommended to replace them and this said person said no. I told him that I would not be able to get the proper torque on them since they were rounded from whoever did the previous brake job. About a week later his caliper came off and did quite a number on his rim. He is a friend of mine and I was with him when this happend and the first thing I told him was "I told you so". So we have to replace them on the side of the highway would of been alot easier in my driveway when we already had it apart. I have only had a problem this one time and it was because I couldn't properly torque it so to me as long as it can be torqued it should be good.

I tried to get the bolts from the local dealer in orange county...turns out its not an item they typically stock but have to special order but they do stock the rotors. So either the rotors never get used or they also reuse the bolts.

Interesting.

They were stock items for my STR at my local dealer's parts dept.

Thread lock is not about whether you can or cannot torque to spec, of course.

Thanks guys. I know some head bolts have built in "torque stretch", that prevents them from reuse but didn't think this would be the case with caliper bolts. Was able to get torque and used blue treadlock.

I was just making the statement that getting them to torque spec has never caused me problems from any brake job I have done in the past, except the one that I couldn't.

I figured as much. Kinda wonder why they use thread lock and say to replace them. Not unique to jag, btw.

I value my sleep too much to "save" a tiny amount of money by not doing as they say with a safety-critical item.

They are about $7 at the dealer. I'm sure the forum sponsor could hook you up quick.

I believe thare is more than one Jag dealer in Orange County. Which one did you try?
One way to find dealers is thru www.cars.com just click on Jags and input your zip code, and what ever miles you want to go for the parts. Might call their parts dept. first...
Good luck...
