Replace cigarette Lighter

abonano,
I removed the console and removed the ashtray assembly, but I need to remove the lighter from the ashtray housing. Green plastic surrounds the metal portion of the lighter and this is what secures the lighter in the housing. I am not sure how to remove this portion without destroying it.
Yes, I also did put in the thread concerning the rear rents. I will check it out.
Thanks,
Henry

I believe the cigarette lighter is part of the ash tray assembly - if I had to guess it might be removed by depressing the tangs (if they are there) - in my parts catalog I do not show a part number for the cigarette lighter itself, only the ashtray assembly that includes the cigarette lighter.
Did you check the wires going to the cigarette lighter are properly connected and snug and the associated fuse for the lighter - the lighters rarely burn out... but the fuses do...

The cigarette lighter is working, I need to replace the housing because of broken clips that hold the cover. I don't know when this changed but Jaguar sells the astray in parts instead of the entire assemble. I was told this when I went and bought the parts from the dealer.
I believe you are right about the tangs, I didn't know if there is a special tool or trick because of the location and it looks like both tangs will need to be pushed at the same time.

Henry you keep posting for instructions but the factory manual is free on this web site??
Install the JTIS and the JEPC. Both are free downloads on this forum. These are the same documents the dealer uses. Many exploded diagrams so you can see how things are assembled.
Really a great resource!

Hey guys,
I have a 2005 x-type and the cigarette lighter doesn't work. I have checked the fuse and the orange wires. Please let me know if there is something else to check. I am trying to remove the lighter form the ashtray like Henry did but I cant figure it out and I dont want to break the green housing around the lighter. Henry or any one else have specific instructions on how to remove it?

Abonano,
I found out that the green plastic lighter housing is pressed on to the metal portion of the lighter. Once I separated the green plastic housing, I was able to install the lighter into the new ashtray housing.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge in this matter.

Have my console out, and removed ashtray. Need to get lighter out of old ashtray. And no - the new ashtray housing does NOT come with a new lighter, Jaguar has now separated the parts. Thank goodness because $150+ for the whole assembly to fix a broken door clip is nuts. But.... I can't for life of me get the green plastic housing off cigarette lighter. What's the trick? Don't want to break anything.

HENRY,
I know this is an old string but I read with frustration every response to your question about "how to remove the green plastic from the lighter housing" and you NEVER did get an answer. Well, I have the exact same issue and wondered if anyone could answer that question? Did you get it resolved?
Thanks for your time,
Greg

The green lighting ring is a press fit and it slides into place. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE/INSTALL!!!!!
You might want to get ready to replace it if you break it removing the green ring.
I think they are available as a separate part.
Spray some silicone lubricant to help slide it off. You will likely need a pocket screwdriver or something to pry with. You might have to turn it while sliding to align parts and slots.
I have not replaced one in a decade but I had to do this all the time at the Jaguar Dealer. Luckily the parts dept was just across the shop.

Removal of console ?
I replaced my cigarette lighter and i didn`t have to remove the center console.
It was so easy only took me roughly 5 minutes as all you have to do is lift trim around gear lever with a pry bar or a flat headed screw driver with electrical tape over head of screw driver.
When trim is of is just a mater of 2 philip screws holding unit in place, just frmove then and whole unit comes out then you just need unplug the cables to lighter..
to remove green plastic light trim on cigarette lighter i just used my rotor bearing clamps and it just unclips.

05 jag x type lighter housing removal
Look inside the housing and you will see the two green clips holding that green cover on , what I did was take a small thin screw driver and outside those two clips lightly tapped the screwdriver to mangle those clips and was able to slide the green cover off of the housing.
