Default Restricted performance

Hello all,

Please forgive me in advance I am a complete novice.

I purchased a 2.5 V6 2003 S-Type 2 days ago it has done 92k miles. It was working perfectly up until last night when I had to do a 3 point turn on a narrow road to avoid being stuck behind a bin lorry all night. I completed the turn popped it in D and moved off about 50 yards down the road the engine management light comes on and the restricted performance message appears.

The car was MoT'd 3 weeks ago with no engine related issues and was serviced when I bought it (new oil filter, levels check etc) the air filter was not changed.

Is anyone able to give me a steer as to what the issue could be. A friend is lending me his code reader later today and I will post error codes once I have them.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Bristol, not much we can do until you post the actual code numbers, otherwise it's going to get expensive quickly!

Also check the battery is not old or a bit flat.

Thanks for the replies:

The codes that came up were: P0170, P0174 & P1111

I have seen all those codes mentioned on various threads on here. Am I right in saying it is likely to be the MAF?

The battery does look a little tired but I do not have equipment to test it.

Thanks again for your help.

Don't worry about the P1111. I am not familiar with the 2.5 V6, but I believe that it is quite similar to the 3.0 V6. Take a look at the follow link , hopefully you have access to the pics with the descriptions.

You might want to stop over at the New Member board and properly introduce yourself per forum protocol.

Thank you Joyce that is helpful.

I have managed to clear the warning light and restricted performance message with the help of the diagnostic tool.

The 2.5L and the 3.0L look very similar to my untrained eye. I shall take her out on the open road later and see what happens, I will also give the MAF a clean on the weekend and attempt a rudimentary smoke test.

Is hall endeavour to keep you updated.

I will of course introduce myself on the new members board. Didn't intend to break protocol.

Many thanks

Speaking as one who had those lean codes that were ultimately only rectified by a MAF swap, I'd say that should be your last suspect. Perform due diligence to eliminate any possibility of vacuum leaks first.

If your scanner won't fetch live data, such that you can map fuel trims, get one that will. This will help your diagnostics immeasurably.

And don't be surprised when you check codes again and have P1000 in lieu of P1111.

Clearing the codes is all very well except it also clears the OBD monitors and discards data you may need.

Instead, watching live data and checking freeze frame data would have been worthwhile. You can still do the live data.

Default Good news

I have located the breather hose that is causing the problem. Looks as though a previous owner had tried to plug a hole in the hose with a mixtre of sealant and tape both of which had melted and been sucked inside the hose which had in turn collapsed.

Anyway I popped into my local dealership and begged them for a replacement. The hose cost me £6 and the car is now running better than ever with no repeat of any warning lights or messages.

Hurray.

Thanks for all your help.

Always appreciate it when an OP has the courtesy to post the ultimate resolution to the initial problem!
