The OBDII scanner you get depends on how detailed you want to get with your car. You can spend $30.00 to $400.00 for a scanner. I have three, one at $30.00 just to get the codes, the others are one for my smart phone and the other is detailed and works with my computer. If you have a smart phone you can up load the program free (Torque) and you can use an ELM327 with Bluetooth and gain a few additional checks and the last one is computer based and provides more than you can imagine. All are good it just depends on how detailed you want to be. Keep in mind that Jaguar has a few codes that are proprietary.

For the price you just can't beat the ELM327. So maybe start there and see if is enough?
I got a cheap Chinese version off EBay for about $10-$15 and it works perfect with my old laptop. I am still surprised that it works as good as it does for the price. I am still considering getting the Bluetooth version because it's easier to hook up.

But please one more question, I want to do the service after the scan for the codes but I'm somehow confused about the part number of the upper inlet manifold gasket because part number XR843536 seems to referring to the X Type jaguar. Do we have a different part number for S Type vin NO253... (2003 year)or the s type share x type the part number

I've tried to purchase the inlet manifold gaskets online but it seems most sellers are as confused as I when it comes to part number for s type vin NO25...
Actually two sellers tried to sell me the gaskets with part number XR843536 but immediately withdrew and told me to look for the jaguar part number.

Hello hon members, today I tried to hook on the ELM327 OBDII which has justarrived. The scanner could not find codes; it just gave me the message thatthere were not trouble codes. The other message I got was the green enginemanagement symbol with 'ok' word under it. But the myth is that when I wasplugging the scanner the engine management light was on. The engine managementlight and restricted performance comes on intermittently.
Please help what step should I take now? Thanks very much for you advice.

If the fault is intermittent this could be a problem. You have two choices the first is to wait for the fault to set a code or plug the ELM327 in and drive with it and your computer on the passenger seat ant hope to capture the code that way. Be sure you have a good battery in the computer. One of the reasons I have a self contained OBDII reader along with a computer based unit.

Hello sir, just an update, today I hooked on the ELM327 OBDII in and drive with it as you instructed but the outcome is the same, 'no troubled codes and no infected codes pending.’ Could it be that the scanner does not detect anything or its not compatible? May be I bought the wrong OBDII, please could you take a look at the picture of OBDII just above two or three posts above. Please advise if there is a need to buy another one.

Did your Restricted Performance come up when you were driving or any malfunction lights come up at all? You must get an indication with the OBDII reader connected to capture the fault. Yes Jaguar does have proprietary codes you will not be at liberty to read with that code reader.

The stickies have the codes PDF and also JTIS. Both have what you need to see what those are and what the causes are. Also on Gus's site.
With so many I'd say the battery is #1 suspect. Probably failing.
With so many about all you can do is note all the details, clear, and see which come back and in what order.

I also have the same ELM327 and was going to suggest it was a software problem. The ELM327 can pass the data thru but you need the correct software to interpret what is going on. I am surprised you got the "U" codes because I have not seen those from a non-factory scanner before.
I am a bit worried about the 736 code because that is a transmission code.
So now that you have it working. Let's get your car fixed!!
You have a raft of codes but that is no help. First clear all the codes. Then drive around until the car has the check engine light. Now read the codes again and post them up.
I think once you do this the list of codes should be much smaller.
Good job on working thru all your problems getting the codes. I promise it will be worth it!!
