Default Reverse sensors

Guys,

I have had a good scan of the forum but cannot find an answer...

I reverse the car out of the drive which is a solid wall for half the distance, then it is just a sparse hedge. The car remains 2-3 feet away from the wall, but the sensors beep the entire time until I pass the end of the wall. Is this normal?

I have had a good look inside and out and there is no obvious misalignment and all the sensors 'click' reassuringly.

If this is normal is there a way to 'reduce' this sideways sensitivity??? It is a little frustrating... Even reverse parking produces beeping from the vehicles on each side when there is nothing directly behind me. I do get the increasing pitch and frequency when closing on an object behind me.

My Volvo does not beep when I reverse down the same pathway and that car is generally over sensitive to anything safety related.

Cheers,

I have a basketball pole on one side of the driveway and my S-type does the exact same thing when I pass it

The sensors are insanely sensitive. Mine will detect road elevation changes at stop lights... often... It will also pickup cars next to me if they're close.. or not.. I can't find a pattern. It's pretty annoying. It's supposed to only work at 5mph or under etc but it should shut the hell up if you're not moving.

Why have you selected reverse gear at a stoplight?

In my car the sensors are in the front and rear bumper. My understanding is the fronts are active at 5 or 3 mph (i forget) and below in drive and the rears the same in reverse.

Let's stick to the sensors the thread is about - reverse ones!

Play somewhere safe and see how the sound changes then you'll know what to expect.

No. Backup sensors are only active when the car is in reverse. You can prove this very easy. Put the car in reverse and move somewhere so the rear sensors are making noise. With the car stopped shift to N or any other gear. The noise will stop as soon as the shifter is moved out of reverse.

The front park sensors are active up to 15 MPH and then shut off. The thinking is at any speed above that you are already destined for an impact and you have no time to stop. The beeping parking sensor will just complicate things!

If they are going off and you don't think they should get a toothbrush and do some light cleaning of the sensor face. I have noticed that when it's icy out the sensors seem to go off a lot more?

Thanks guys,

I'll give them a good clean, but live with the fact that they are a little over sensitive...

Cheers,

Cheers,
Cleaning them won't reduce sensitivity. What you're observing is 'the nature of the beast' with S-types. I have another vehicle that I wish was as all-seeing as the Jag. The lack of side sensitivity has let me come just a little too close a few times.
