Default Rotten Rear-Tie Rods

Hello all,

Would appreciate some technical input if anyone out there can help...

We've discovered both rear-tie rods are badly corroded - particularly the wheel end rubber boots which long-ago perished dumping grease.

When gripped the whole part can be twisted from roughly 2 o'clock to 5 o'clock.

1.Would these cause judder on heavy acceleration and wheel's are free(er) to move than normal?

2.Would PCM think this is Gearbox Fault?

Code p0733 was picked-up - not much info on this forum.

Thanks,

Your P0733 code is a transmission issue. Therefore it would have nothing the do with the rear suspension.

Heres a link at what you are looking at as far as rear tie rod replacement:

P0733=3rd gear ratio fault--not clear to me how this might be associated with your tie rod.How much can you move the wheel when it is jacked off the ground?

Thanks for that...but I didn't think Jaguars were that simple.

I've already removed them and know how critical these are for keeping wheels straight.

If the rear-wheels are moving unnaturally (toe-in/out) - how would the input/ output transmission sensors know it's a rotten tie-rods - it wouldn't and surely assumes gearbox fault because the power isn't being transmitted properly.

Anyone see my point here?

What are the symptoms of failed tie-rods?

I kind of see your logic. But if the tie rods did trigger the P0733 (which is 3rd gear fault) I would think that it would also trigger P0731 (1st gear), P0732 (2nd gear), and also a P0734 (obviously 4th gear).

correct?

According to alldata for the P0733 fault you need to:

Start vehicle, place into 3rd gear postion drive for 5 minutes varying acceleration and speed.

I do not know what the above will accomplish and that is all that alldata states on the issue.

I don't know any way you can get that code due to tie rods!

Can't hurt to fix them and see if the code returns, but I guess it will

I don't know if it can cause that code but the commonish fault on the Ford 5R55N is a spring, as here www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s-type-s-type-r-supercharged-v8-15/stype-5r55n-valve-spring-replacement-22929/

Thanks,

This is the head-ache....

Would p0733 remain stored after 4-3 spring replacement ?

Because of Jaguar's incompetence back in June (they cleared the codes but wouldn't drive and re-scan ) we're not even 100% if p0733 remains flagged - this might have been present due to broken 4-3 spring which I replaced months ago.

What is certain is the back-end shakes/ hesitates on hard acceleration - there are ABS teeth rings which are monitored by the traction control.

NO BUT IF THE AZIMUTH IS NO LONGER COINCIDING WITH THE CELESTIAL MERIDIAN. TO THE UNIFORMED OBSERVER IT MAY APPEAR AS SUCH IF YOURE LOOKING FOR THE PROJECTED VECTOR AND THE REFERANCE VECTOR TO BE THE AZIMUTH ANGLE. IF IT IS OUT OF VECTOR IT WILL NO LONGER BE THE AZIMUTH AND THEREFOR COULD BE CONSTRUED BY THE TCM AS A FAULTY
3RD GEAR RATIO FAULT. BUT USEALLY ON A 2000-2002.5 IT WOULD NOT BE.
ON A 2000-2002.5 THE SYMPTOM IS MOST PROLIFIC AS INNER REAR TIRE WEAR SINCE THE PLANNED TRAJECTORY OF THE INTENDED PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE IS NO LONGER REALIZED BY WORNOUT REAR TIE RODS

D'oh. I overlooked that!!

You can clear codes (including P0733) using any half-decent OBD tool or disconnect battery (but then will need radio code, to reset 1-touch windows etc).

Brutal,

Fabulous. Just the kind of answer I was hoping!

The rear suspension is indeed a fine-tuned instrument. If i'm able to twist the component by hand, what will 230+bhp pushing 1800kg be doing? It must be significant?

JagV8,

I did a hard-reset back in June before getting the codes read - therefore the p0733 popped back-up even with the repaired 4-3 spring installed?

What's interesting is that last week I fitted a new coolant tank and discovered system was 2-3 ltrs low and cracked tank was loosing pressure. Drove the car today and Gearbox Fault is back on the cluster.

Weird.

Probably a solid fault, sorry to say. Still nothing wrong with fixing the other things, clear codes and hoping.

Is it worth me crawling around under the vehicle with the fluke meter to start on the plug readings?

When you say solid fault - is this something I could do myself?

It's not a ZF. It's a 2000MY car so Ford 5R55N, so the codes are in the PCM and are cleared with OBD clear or battery off.

If that complete load of tosh in huge red text was deliberate then congratulations you've totally insulted me so please don't comment on my posts again.

JagV8 correct it is not the ZF BOX.
