Do the conditions match this description:

'surge in excess of 150rpm during engine warm up at a vehicle speed in the region of 40mph (64.3kph) to 60mph (96.5kph)'

If so, then TSB S307-14 should be applied. This is a software 'flash' done by a dealer.

Is there a way to determine that you need software updates outside of suspicion?

1. Connect the dealer tool.

Or - not for the faint of heart:
2. Read out the calibration ID for each of the modules (TCM & PCM). (Then compare with updated IDs.) If this is beyond you, see #1.

Need or want?

If the car is operating well, you don't 'need'.
