Default S Type with crank sensor problem.

I am looking to buy a 1998 3litre S Type. 134k. They say the crank sensor requires replacing and the cam cover. The owner had his car recovered after it would not start having done a 20 mile journey and being recovered to a Jaguar agent who charged him £400 to tell him he needed those parts and left him with a box of bits including the belt, pulley and bolt.
What is worst scenario with this please? I hope your crystal ball is suitably polished.

My crystal ball says to post a brief intro in the new members section and add your vehicle to your signature. Welcome... Are you sure you have a 1998 S Type? Check the label on the drivers side door.

Thanks for that. It is an S Type but a 1999 T reg so one of the first. By my description does it sound as though the belt has gone? Would the valves be damaged? Did they need to remove the belt and pulley to replace the sensor?
Apologies for the lack of detail but the seller appears to not have a clue what the problem is.

I don't think you'll find out without doing work on the actual car. For sure that sensor has to work.

If the chains are OK, the timing will be OK, won't it?

Default More info.....

I went to see the car and found out the following,
1. It is chain driven so no timing problem.
2. The belt I am referring to is the alternator belt so no
problems replacing it.
3. The jag agent said the crank case itself is damaged, how can that happen as I have seen the sensor that was removed and that appears intact? It is held in place with an 8 or 6mm bolt.
What else is there in that area covered by the crank case cover to have come adrift and cause damage to the cover? Is it a simple job to remove the crank case cover now the belt and pulley wheel has been removed?
Thanks again for help given.
Any ideas please?
