S type Cutting out.

S type Cutting out.
Hello,
I have been reading around this forum in the background for a while now. Very informative and useful
I do however have an issue I have been unable to find a solution to despite scouring the forum.
I have purchased a 2001 S-type 3.0 'sport'. It had a DCS light on at point of viewing, but a condition of the sale was that this was rectified. And true to word, the light was gone when I collected it. Apparently it was a wheel sensor that needed replacing.
I have done 400 seamless miles in the car since purchase.
However the car will now occasionally cut out whilst driving, and throw up a DCS system fault, or a Fuel Trip Computer error message. Its quite dangerous as the engine just cuts out without warning.
I am unsure if it is related, but the car will occasionally (1/10 times) not start. The red LED on the dashboard will flash rapidly, returning a code of 5 blinks followed by one blink (if memory serves me correctly). The car will turn over but not catch. No matter how long you try. Leave it for 10 minutes and it will normally cure this.
I have replaced the fuel pump(s) with some obtained from a breakers yard. No solution.
I have had the battery checked, and it is (according the the machine) in 'Good health' with 620 of 720 cold cranking amps present. It is not sluggish to start. I read that these cars are sensitive to battery conditions, but i would consider this to be fine?
Im scratching my head a little now, as I have struggled to find anyone who has experienced the cutting out with error messages.
Any help will be much appreciated
Kind Regards
Grant

Thanks for the swift response.
I'll have to wait for the intermittent problem to happen again, and will get back to you.
Its funny you should say about the air leak, i do have a vacuum leak to what I believe to be an oil breather pipe. Its at the rear of the engine, right next to the inlet manifold. This is the part that requires replacing, but i couldn't see this causing the cutting out?

There is no mention of the number of kilometres/miles on this vehicle, however given the age, it is quite common for the breather hose under the lower inlet manifold on the 3.0 litre engine to collapse or perish over time.
If you search this forum, you will find numerous threads about the breather hoses and the IMT sealing rings on the upper part of the inlet manifold, both of which can cause vacuum leaks producing some of the symptoms you describe.

Thanks for the info guys. So I managed to get some OBD codes read today.
The following came up:
P0171 - System too lean - Bank 1
P0174 - System too lean - Bank 2
P0430 - Catalyst efficiency below threshold
P1383 - Over retarded camshaft timing - Bank 1
P1388 - Over retarded camshaft timing - Bank 2
So my thinking is; if the split vacuum pipe that commonly throws up the 171&174 codes, this would also cause a lack in emissions, and the car to think the the timing is retarded?

It appears you may have an issue with PATS, the passive anti-theft system. Consult JTIS and search this forum for information.
