Default S Type design question.

Hi Guys,

In the course of looking at all the S Type posts I have seen hundreds of pics of this model.

Something I have been wondering about for a long time is...

Why does there appear to be such a large gap between the hood/bonnet and the headlight shroud panel, when the bonnet is closed?

In a shut lines picture it always looks like there is a significant gap that should be taken out by adjusting the bonnet fixings.

I'd appreciate anyone setting me straight on this (one of those bugging me type of things).

And I never see a live S Type to have a go at.

Thanks.

Wow, and I thought it was just me...

I haven't actually seen that many S-Types in the flesh. Do they all have the gap between the hood and the headlamps? The gap is much bigger than the one between the hood and the fender. I don't think it can be adjusted because the hood already aligns well with the fenders.

Richard,

After looking at my own S-Type, I can only speculate that the reason for the larger-than-average gap between the hood/bonnet and the headlight shround panel is to minimize the possibility of the hood cutouts for the four headlights breaking the headlight glass in the event that the hood is slammed down too hard. The gap around the four headlights is much less, and if you were to attempt to lessen the gap between the hood and the headlight shroud panel you would greatly increase your risk of slamming your hood against the four headlights....

As I said, this is pure speculation on my part. Maybe Brutal has a better answer....

That's a good point I never thought about!!

But then if you look at the XF the hood fits the same way over the bulging headlight and that car has a much slimmer gap. So I am not sure?

Thanks guys, at least I'm not seeing things.

It always looks as though the owner has forgotten to give that final flat handed push to close.

There must be a concrete reason behind it, perhaps as Jon says.

This has bugged me since day one. I doubt it would provide any additional airflow for cooling. When I get my bumpers repainted, I will ask my father-in-law if he can build up the bottom of the gap to even it out with the side hood gap.
