Default S-Type fuel pumps

Hello fellow cat lovers. My name i s Dave, currently living in Dallas, TX. Can anyone out there tell me what the flow rate on an 06 s type, 3.0 fuel pump should be ? Instead of paying $600 for a fuel pump I want to put an inline external pump in. My only concern is the GPH's and what to do with the return line. Right now the car is stranded fifty miles out and in threat of being towed so rapid response would be greatly appreciated right now......P.S...and thats what I'll be doing for my 58th B-day ! Dallas Dave

I dont know the answer but I wonder if your idea will work. The pcm modulates the fuel pressure so its not going to like the inline pump

Welcome to the forums Dave,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

You must replace the fuel pump and filter as the PCM controls the fuel pump.

Normal fuel pump output for the naturally aspirated vehicles is about 3 bar. The pressure can be tested by fitting an external gauge to the schrader fitting on the engine fuel rail, or by using a smart phone with the Torque app to access the PCM through the OBD port via a Bluetooth adapter.

With the ignition in the ON position, the fuel pressure should be 3 bar prior to engaging the starter motor. If there is no fuel pressure, check the electrical circuit. If there is pressure, but the pressure drops when the starter is engaged, the Crankshaft Position sensor has most likely failed.

Hi Dave, and welcome to the forum.

Not sure where you found that price, but $600 sounds really high for a new pump. Is that for the entire pickup/float/pump assembly? IIRC, you can get just the pump for much less than that. Maybe somebody else can chime in.

As others have suggested, converting to a non-stock pump arrangement will be very difficult, and certainly not worth the hassle. The computer expects to see proper feedback as it adjusts the stock pump output. Without this feedback, I suspect you'd get all sorts of fault codes and maybe even restricted performance.

If the car has to be moved, I'd suggest spending $100 to rent a flatbed trailer and get the car home where you can fix it properly versus jury-rigging something.

Default Replace cheaper

Fuel pumps can be had under 50 bucks from a salvage yard. Take a small battery with you, to test them as you pull them. Just need them to kick over, don't run them dry. If you have no Jaguars in your local yards, look for Lincoln LS, or Ford Thunderbird. They use the same pumps. A lot easier than trying to remap all the garbage electronics these cars have in them.
just my .02 cents

If you watch this video. He shows how you can replace the fuel pump for around 10 dollars.

Ooh, excellent info. The only caution I'd add is the pump he installed is a $10 no-name eBay special. I'd highly suggest going with a quality brand instead, such as Motorcraft, Bosch, etc. Maybe $50?

OP, you still there? Or did we lose you already?... I know we didn't give you the answer you want, but you've got a simple OEM quality repair available at a VERY reasonable price.
