S-Type with gearbox fault

S-Type with gearbox fault
have just bought a Jag S type 2001, only 70k miles and very well looked after but have since had more problems than any other car i have owned put together! Bits and bobs to pass MOT, gearbox fault so replaced transmission fluid, flat tire (ok, my fault that one), flat battery (no idea why still), accelerator pedal fault, and burst expansion tank up a mountain in Spain. All in the space of a month!!
Anyhoo - the gearbox fault has returned. It has trouble upshifting into 5th - usually after awhile on the motorway and then a stop. I sometimes have to pull over and rest the car for awhile and then set out very slowly with fingers crossed and it then gets into 5th where i try and keep it for the rest of the journey.
Do i need a new box which would cost me almost as much as i bought the car for?? could i get the fluid taken out and filtered and put back in??
Desperate for any help as i can't afford any more fixing to the car, but as it is i could not sell it on in any clear conscience. Am i jinxed or is this a normal course of events?? this is my first Jag having dreamt of owning one for about 20 years.
any advice welcome, including where to get cheap parts etc
cheers

That era car has the Ford 5R55N box - you can search here (and the net) about it to see the problems others have had. Not many, but a spring and valve bodies are among them. Any autobox specialist should know that Ford box (and much better than a jag dealer is likely to).
You could get an OBD tool (elm327 £15-20 ebay) and check there are no codes and that the engine is running as it should, because such things as misfires can manifest as gearbox issues (think: the box gets a jerk from the misfire).
I'm working on the basis that the autobox fluid change was done properly: correct fluid and correct amount (you can read about it either here or I expect in the workshop manual £3-4 ebay). Those are critical.
Mine has the ZF box so I only know your one by reading and taking notes.

Thanks alot, i will get onto researching about that box and maybe phone an auto gearbox specialist.
it does have the problem with the accelerator pedal, but i doubt that would affect the gearbox would it?? the oil was changed properly at a Jag specialist, and then it was all fine as i drove to spain, but then the gear problem arose again on the way back.
cheers for the reply
