Default The S-Type is a Great Economy Car

I've had my S-Type for about 4 years now and overall it's proven itself to be a great economy car. Due to the Select Edition warranty I was able to fix any issues at no cost and basically all I've spent money is the normal maintenance stuff. From a reliabilty standpoint, it's dead-nuts reliable. Fuel costs have been pretty good overall since my car has the 3.0 V6. My in-town mpg is about 22 mpg while highway is about 32-34 mpg. I really can't ask for anything more. Considering the performance overall, it beats everything in its price class.

Thank you for presenting your appreciation for the economy of the "S". My 03 STR, when driven conservatively, does pretty good too. Don't quote me, but we see an average of 18 mpg in town and 25 mpg on the highway. The ZF 6 speed coupled with 2.88 rear gears (3.30:1 for the V6) are likely the primary reasons for this relatively good economy.

So how does it compare to your A6 which is about similar size?

The Jag gets about 5-8 mpg more than the Audi A6. My guess this is due to the AWD. Also, the Jag has a bit more power so I don't have to push it as hard as the Audi. The Jag is easier to drive quicker due to its additional power and better handling. It's a sports sedan while the Audi I have (the Avant) is more of an SUV. I can haul a crapload of stuff in the Audi though which has its good and bad points.

I stole our 2005 S-Type 3.0 the week before Christmas 2008 during the depths of the depression. While I expected 24 to 25 highway mpg, I would have called the Jaguar sales guys liars if they had tried to tell me that the car would actually deliver the 33 mpg that my wife has always been able to get with it on her solo trips to and from Tampa to visit her parents....

Sure wish her 2006 XK8 could do that. Thus far she's averaged about 27 mpg with it on that same trip....

Ummm, I thought the unwritten rule here was that we never speak publicly about our cars in glowing terms and instead we only p*ss and moan about minor irritants.

That way, casual viewers will not be tempted to run out and buy one which will in turn drive up the demand and prices on a diminishing fleet.

C'mon guys- shape up!

I don't care who speaks lovingly of their Jaguars or where and how often they do so, the demand for these essentially feared-by-the-general-public vehicles will only continue to decline....

Fat chance on stealing either an '09 XF or '07 XK though. Right now they're running about $28K to $35K depending on trim levels. I've been waiting for the XK prices to drop and it looks like I'll be waiting for a while. I too stole my S-Type but about a month later. It was 14 degrees outside so the dealer knew I was serious. Nobody in their right mind would go out in that weather just to kill a Saturday.

Wait until January, then allow George Androulakis to find and negotiate on a low-mileage 2005 or 2006 XK8 convertible that is headed for auction. He will find an acceptable steal for you....

They'd better not be either NY or NJ cars.

I really like the looks of the new XK cars though. Given that I have to find space for my wife's walker the coupe would be a better option. I did find an '07 XK close to my price range, but it had been in three accidents.

Be careful everybody, there's going to be ten's of thousands of cars that will turn up as new, or "slightly used" but will have some degree of water damage..Used car dealers will be the major suspects trying to peddle these off on an unsuspecting public.

I looked at a GMC Typhoon that had been salvage title and was in a flood in Vegas. It was at a local guys shop where they buy wrecked cars and fix them and sell them. He's telling me how there was no paint work done on it, he had a gm dealer check it out and all they replaced was the fuel pump, that he took it ll apart and cleaned every inch of it.

When I put the car on a lift, there was still mud and sand all over the under side of the frame and body.

Walked away from that one, an bought one with a clean title for only $500 more.
