Hello all,

I have a 2.7d 2005 automatic s-type and have just recently noticed a problem.

Sometimes when I put my foot straight down on the accelerator the car makes a very brief "howling"-like noise from the front that sounds a bit like "oh!". This happens both in and out of sports mode. I don't notice any other problems so it's left me a bit baffled.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Is the gearbox getting ready to fail?

That's a very common issue, there's a TSB on the subject. The latest version of approved transmission fluid contains an additive that will silence the noise.
