S-type lug nut questions

S-type lug nut questions
Driving on our major freeway I ran over something causing the right front to go flat. Later found a small hole in the center of the tread.
The local "Road Ranger" patrol arrived quickly to help me remove the wheel. We are both good sized men but had a hell of a time getting the lug nuts off. Even stripped the SS cover off of three of the nuts and then nearly rounded the nut under getting them off. Similar issue to several forum posts.
I have found many ads for replacement lugs but most of them are the beveled type and to not have the large washer. Question: is the large washer type necessary for safety or can I use the after market chrome, one piece nut without the washer. Also any recommendations of the best quality and price.

I have had my one-piece Mitsubishi lug nuts in place on my 2005 S-Type now for nearly six years. They do not rust and are extremely high quality. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who is interested in getting rid of their lousy capped factory lug nuts. The part number is MB579290. Rockauto.com may still sell them, so I would start there....
As you've already learned the hard way, get those lousy factory lug nuts off of your car as soon as you can....

Here you go. One piece lugs.I've had these on a year and they are just right. You will have to get a larger sized lug wrench (21mm), but all the standard 4 size cross type or folded lug wrenches have that size. From Amazon $31. Also, use a tiny bit of anti-seize on the studs. The purists say no, but Just a little makes them come off easier. Torque to 95 ft. lbs. and you are good to go

+1!
Agreed, do NOT use the beveled style, unless you plan to have a film crew follow you and promise to post the resulting crash video on YouTube for everybody to see.
I'm using Dorman lug nuts on my '02 and am very pleased with them:

Others have reported great results with the Mitsubishi/Chrysler versions. too. They are more expensive, but should be worth it if exposed to road salt. (None of that in Oregon, thankfully...)
If wondering what to do with the old lug nuts and crappy factory lug wrench, please see post #4 here:

Lug nuts
Great advice thanks. I found the Mitsubishi at Amazon as you advised, still $31 and free shipping. Oddly, I checked for compatibility with my 2008 S-type and it said they did not fit. But then I checked your vehicles and it said the same thing. I will place the order today.
I also have an older model of the the Michelin 245/40 ZR18 tire. But found a replacement to order from Walmart for $196.00.
thanks again. I love this forum.

Final chapter on my 2008 S-Type lug issue. New tire received and mounted. Mitsubishi lug nuts received and installed. Finally went to harbor freight this morning and purchased a 25" breaker bar and 21 mm socket. It was still a struggle getting the old nuts off, but persevered and finished the job. Thanks to all of you for the advice and what to do with the old stuff. Picnic is planned for tomorrow morning. I love this forum/

My lug nuts came today. They thread on and are the same except the threaded sleeve that goes against the mag is a slight 1/8 inch longer ...The OEM have some added thickness on the nut under the washer. I only tried one so far and it doesn't seem to bottom out on the beveled end and the new one felt right when I snugged it down .. Has anyone else run into this?

This is Chad. I will be sending you a USPS tag to return the lug nuts and issue you a refund.
Our vendor is re-tooling the mold for those lugs and it should be ready sometime in Feb. 2016, sorry for the inconvenience.
