I don't feel to bad about getting 20 mpg with a 400 hp car (it could be worse). The lurch can easily be fixed at the right dealership (it took 3 times for my dealership to get it right but I've been lurch free for over 2 years). DCCV problems seem to be a known issue. Be careful of droopy headlights, there's an easy fix in the FAQ section but you'll spend about $1,000 a piece if you have to them replaced.
This topic comes up a lot so finding threads is pretty easy.
The STR is a great car and a fantastic value. Good luck in your hunt!

It's a very full engine bay so any work can be time-consuming. If you don't DIY it can be expensive and also you will have to put in real work to find someone competent to work on the car.
Tires are not cheap. Far worse if you change the 18" wheels for anything else. Even so, don't economise on tires - your life depends on them.
It's a rare car with high performance, don't expect it to be cheap to own.
Good cars, though.

I'm looking also. Looks like my 02 XJ8 VDP is a goner but have not rec'd the final word from the insurance company. Came on unexpectedly a solid sheet of ice about 200 ft long. It was one of those Aw S--t and hang on for the ride moments. If it is totalled as they seeem to think first look then my thoughts are pay me what it the cost of a replacement like vehicle is (and they are not real easy to find like mine). That being the case I would be looking at and XJR or STR. I drove an 03 STR the other day and was amazed at the power (I'm also a C5 Corvette guy). I can see easily wearing the rear tires down. This was a nice car. I have not driven the XJR yet. I have read the posts here. Wouldlike to know if anyone has compared the two. Also I noticed more noise than my VDP has....is this to be expected? Some wind noise increase and I'm thinking rear noise was tires mostly...the STR I drove had Continental tires on it. I'm looking a head in case my car defintiely is totalled.
Thanks,
Bill

The XJ (inc VDP) is more of a silent, waft along, soft ride, I'd say. The STR is a bit less luxurious, has taughter suspension and more road feedback so more of a driver's car. Those aren't tires I like and IMO are noisy.
My 2p (2 cents, here, LOL). Others will have very different views I expect.
Sorry to hear about the ice!

You also might want to get a degree in electrical engineering then you should be good to work on it. Kidding . Just buy one and enjoy it.
