Don't assume you'll get better gas mileage with the X than the STR. I've had both, like a few others here, and I actually get better mileage with the STR than the X Type. The AWD scavenged a lot of power and efficiency, and with the little 2.5 I had you had to keep that mill spinning at high RPM to get moving.
Find a nice STR and buy it. You won't regret it. Take it from someone who did what you are thinking of recently.

JagV8, Thanks for the feedback. Agree, the continental tires would not have been my choice either (had the year wrong on the car I drove...was an 06). I was amazed when I drove the 06 STR....remember my first love and I have one in the garage is Corvette so this was an inviting WOW factor driving the STR. Saw some of the concerns about gas consumption. Was/is not a concern of mine...reason....one of those things that is accepted when looking for certain cars or trucks...it's a given trade off. When I went looking for an SUV the need and want of the vehicle was my concern.....gas mileage and SUVs don't run together...again a given. Competition oriented cars are the same way...for what you want and enjoy in these type of cars gas consumption is not a consideration. Horsepower, torque, handling, speed, acceleration and to have these gas mileage has not play.

If you care about handling then you are gonna want the STR over the XJR. The XJ is more luxury with the air suspension. Plus the STR I think is more sporty looking and the XJ is more luxury sedan looking. Just get the STR and enjoy it. Your next decision should be which year you want. Now you got if you want the newer body, Brembos, etc., these will determine what years you will have to look into.
