Yeah I searched threads and read some of them but would like an answer to my one specific question about a rebuilt engine and also some other tips. Telling me to search other threads is no help since I have read other threads but still have questions.

I am in Northern VA, the car is located outside Richmond so if anyone knows about shops around there I could bring it to get checked at that would help as well.

Thanks, I will ask him for the VIN

Regarding a rebuilt engine, I would want to know who did the work so I could research that particular shop. I would also want copies of all receipts and documentation pertaining to the job. Remember, your safest approach is always "buyer beware"....

You'lll need someone outstanding to check a rebuild was done right and it'll sure cost. Good luck if that's the way you choose to go.

>guy says the engine was recently rebuilt

Personally I would be suspect of that. Doing that would be super $$!

I really don't think a person doing that could get anywhere near a high
enough price to make it worthwhile.

There are no "rebuild kits" everything would be factory parts. It's a very
complex engine, particularly as an STR.

Get more evidence before making a decision.

Yeah I talked myself out of it a couple weeks back but it's still available and I'm thinking about it again. Got the price down a little more too.

He says the cars was his dads and his dad had spent around $12000 to rebuild it. He doesn't have the paperwork for the rebuild but does have an engine dyno sheet from after.

He says all it needs is a new windshield and two new tires,,,what can I expect to pay for a windshield?

Also I will definitely have a shop take a look at it before I would buy it. I actually called a shop by him (car is 2.5 hours away) and the guy at the shop said they aren't really fans of any S-types?

Without the proper documentation I would not even consider purchasing such a potential nightmare regardless of how far the price had dropped. Proceed at your own risk....

It's a highly complex car with a dubious history. If you're fantastic at DIY and have lots of money, you may get lucky. Otherwise... no.

Sorry that I resurrect this after so many years, but I seem to have the same simptoms on my 2003 STR. When cold, for the first few minutes and on light constant speeds (20-30 mph) it "pulses" lightly (revs up and down at approx. 1s intervals). All goes away after 5 minutes or so. Is it the same you experienced? My car has 33k miles now.

If it gets worst it seems that I'll get the warning light, right? Anyone can point me to the TSB?

Thanks

If you go to the top of the s type forum under TSB's
Scroll down to transmition surge .
It's just a software update . Hopefully mine does it too only till it's warm 10-15min I just select 4th gear seems to smooth it out .

It doesn't get worse ! And I've never seen it cause a light or code .

Thanks for pointing me to it, I'm still "new" here

In any case, I had my transmission computer reflashed like 5 years ago because it was doing a very hard downshift from 2nd to 1st gear when for example stopping at a trafic light. I believe that what the new software did was to downshift once the car stand still because now, only some times, I get the hard downshift if I do a very quick stop and I accelerate hard (which forces the downshift to 1st). I avoid it doing minimum a 1 sec. stop at the sign, so I give time to the TCP to engage 1st before accelerating again. It is safer also

The point is, the update they did must have included already the "surge" fix from this TSB which is from 12/2003... so could still be the torque converter?

They might might not have done the 'surge' update at the same time. Some cars have the updated software but still have the surge, like mine.
