Advice please on whether I’m just unlucky with my 54 Jaguar 2.7 diesel S-type, or if the garage saw me coming. Last year it started to throw out dark smoke under acceleration. This only happened a few times over a couple of months then stopped. It then started to suffer from a lack of power – pulling away from a junction it would get up to 25 mph then refuse to go any faster. If I stopped and restarted the engine, the problem disappeared. Sometimes there was smoke when pulling away, but most of the time there wasn’t. I went to an independent Jag specialist, who told me before looking at the car that the problems were probably due to a faulty EGR valve. After using the diagnostic kit, they told me one of the turbos needed to be replaced. This was done in September and it looked as if the problem had been cured. Since then there have been 3 or 4 occasions when the car has refused to go above 25 mph or so, but cleared itself if I kept my foot down (instead of having to restart the engine). When the power returns, dark smoke comes out of the exhaust. Most of the time the car runs fine.
I’ve been back to the same garage, which now says the EGR valve needs to be replaced. They say there’s no problem with the new turbo and that both faults produce similar symptoms.
Does this sound plausible? The car has done just over 40,000miles.

You may be stretching a bit to find some good diesel experience here. For one, I'm sure stating 54 Jaguar means something like a 2004. I'm sure you are referencing the number plate / registration. Since a lot of the users here are from North America, myself included, they won't understand that reference. Also, the diesel cars are not available in North America so our experience with them is very limited. That said, I had a gasoline V6 Chevy behave very much like you stated and they "cleaned" the EGR system and it cleared it up. That was caused by using the wrong grade fuel and caused a carbon build up. Now our current Dodge Caravan (you can chuckle at that, I know those are camping trailers in the UK) had the EGR valve go bad and there was no apparent drive-ability issues. There may have been a loss of MPG, but I didn't measure it. That failure tripped a warning light and recorded a code. Once replaced, the code vanished. I did try to clean it first, and it didn't work. So, it is hard to tell. Has your car tripped any warning lamps?

You'd be far better off on the UK www.jaguarforum.co.uk
Could it be the DPF? But ask there!
