Angry s type tranny problem

I just purchased a used 05' S-Type about three months ago and already I have had to have the oil pan gasket replaced a few weeks ago at the dealer. I was driving on the interstate when I went to pass another car and the transmission made a "clunk" noise as it downshifted. It also downshifted on its own and made the "clunk" noise again while I was just cruising along(twice). Could anything have happened to my transmission while they were changing the oil pan gasket, or am I about to spend some cash on a tranny repair? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tony

Someone will have other ideas - hopefully with experience / knowledge.

I'd be wondering if there was a slight leak (not necessarily at the tranny pan) leading to a low fluid level. If I'd no warranty (do you have one?) I'd be looking at all the tranny lines, wiping them clean and re-checking regularly.

You could usefully put your engine size & year in your signature, btw.

Bring her back to the dealer immediately, don't wait past 30 days. If the "clunk" wasn't detectable until after their trans. fluid and pan swap then they may be culpable.

Why was the pan and gasket changed? Putting 2 and 2 together sounds like you now have a possible low fluid level. I am convinced most dealers main or otherwise are basically clueless when it comes to auto boxes.

Thanks for all the replies. It is a 2005 with a 3.0 engine,79,000 miles. The car had an oil leak that was found after my 30 day warranty expired and the dealer changed the oil pan gasket.. I read online where the engine had to be lifted to do this, so I thought by chance they may have had to do something to the tranny(unplug sensors ect...) as part of the oil leak repair. I am hoping it will be something minor,as I was told a rebuild would be around $4500.00!

Thanks again,
Tony

I'll tell you what it MIGHT be. The wiring loom part of which controls the gearbox, chaffs on the body behind the front bumper. It's a bumper off job but it's a one time permanent fix.
It wrecked my gearbox (still under warranty ), the conduit on the wiring had worn through. Symptoms were tran. was jumping in and out of gear with no input from me. It's a known (to Jaguar) fault. Get them to check the wiring.

Victor,

Thanks for the info. I read another post with the same situation and it was the wire harness in the front, behind the bumper as well. Can you see this loom if you take the plastic cover off that's over the radiator? If so, what side is it on? Driver/passenger?
Thanks again,
Tony

You'd need the bumper off, as Victor said. The harness can also go bad where it's hidden inside the wheel arches (wells). The liners would need to be removed.

The workshop manual shows the approx routes of the major harnesses, so anyone doing the work should just refer to it.

I just moved the car back and found a coffee can lid size puddle under the tranny! Drove the car about two miles and back. Parked in a different part of driveway and now there is a dime sized leak under the tranny! I can see wet spot on the bottom of the transmission as well.
My sarcastic wife said to "just put some tape on it!" ,laughed and walked in the house! I think I'll put the repair on HER credit card and see how she laughs then!

Could it be aircon water (condensation)?

I wish it was just water. It felt greasy when I touched it,and I drove around the block with the A/C off just in case. When I drove my wifes car the waterspots evaporated shortly afterwards. My spot has been there all day/evening.
My neighbors already ask why the rental car has been in the driveway so many times for the Jag.This will be my 5th trip to the dealer since I got it 3 months ago.

Oh. Sorry to hear the details (but you checked very sensibly). The ZF doesn't like to be low on fluid so it'll need fixing and soon

Chances are it's going to be the sleeve for the transmission valve body.

Look here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=30991

I was blessed with a similar puddle when I took the car out to head for the airport yesterday.
With luck I can get at it at Christmas, it will give me time to ponder the options.

Dealer says it was not the transmission! It was the drive shaft! The clear/light fluid wasn't from the tranny. They said the fluid came from the drive shaft? Told me it was around $2100.00 but when I complained about how many times I had been there for other issues they only charged me for 1/2 the price if the drive shaft($600.00) and they would pay the rest and the labor.
My amount out of pocket is $600.00 + tax. I confirmed the drive shaft price($1200.00)and install amount with another dealer and it was very close.
I hope they are correct! Thanks for all the help/suggestions!
